History Channel Examines Nuclear Attack on DC Sept 28
Posted by: Lurker. ()
Date: September 21, 2009 12:34PM

Show on Sept 28, next Monday night on the History Channel -

Against a morning sky, a mushroom cloud spirals heavenward. A nuclear bomb has detonated in the heart of Washington D.C., incinerating 15,000 residents in just 15 seconds. More than 50% of the population living within a 1/2 mile radius of the explosion is either dead or severely injured. The next 24 hours will determine whether the rest of the city lives or dies. To survive this horrific ordeal they will need a plan. And lucky for us--there is one. But will it work? For the first time on television, the Department of Homeland Security reveals the most detailed and comprehensive plan to save America should terrorists go nuclear. This chilling two-hour special delves into the complex and highly secretive world of disaster planning.

Glad to know our proximity will allow for a quick blast, and not much more afterwards. The bastards in Loudoun and PWC will be hurtin. And damn, can the History Channel get more depressing? A few weeks ago it was nothing but armaggedon type of programming.

Hopefully FEMA didn't have any contributions to the emergency planning. Judging by Katrina and previous disasters, I think I'm better off fending for myself.

Blessed are the murderous.

im expecting that there will be enough radiation that if you survived, you would die painfully/slowly. so, if there is word of a nuclear strike in route, drive towards DC. dont be one of those suckers that dies from from radiation in traffic, go out in the blast! \o/

Yeah...that would be stupid! Like flying an airplane into a building in order to knock it down. Won't freaking happen (because, I mean, there's no way to survive that, right?).

Name each war and country that has used Nuclear weapons? How many is that?

The answer is one, during WWII.

The United States is the only country to have used a nuclear weapon in war.

All, some of us have been working the issue of a Nuclear attack for 40+ years. Using the 10 megaton scenerio is ill advised. It sends the wrong message 15,000 crispy critters in seconds does little to motive this population. The use of a 1-2 megaton device is probably more realistic and would be a vehicle to get everyones attention and remove the utter dispair associated with the other scenerio. JB

From the show last night it looked like the one nuke would of done plenty to screw stuff up. The part about "shelter in place" is unrealistic. Moving people out of the area is also a farce.

I did find the COG plan to be interesting. I didn't know the COG plan was so detailed and assumed all of Congress and Washington got wiped out.

The show's premise used a 10 KILOton "suitcase nuke". Not megaton.

If terrorists are capable of building a fission device one must consider it takes considerably less engineering to "pump" it. Second US test after WWII incorporated this to boost yield.
Uranium 238 (depleted form) is still there for the picking in battle zones of Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Afghanistan. From this a piece of the puzzle can be melted and shaped as required.

Physics education needed to know, and arrange which elements can be incorporated to the device to slow neutrons and facilitate thermo-nuclear boost using the primitive fission warhead as a trigger is clearly available to trans-national terror groups.
Weight of the device is not that critical due to nature of delivery.
Less weight concern means the thing could be shielded considerably by Uranium 238/lead.

Smuggled Plutonium is primarily an alpha emitter, less detectable than a uranium 235 based weapon.

Pumping can lift yield considerably from the 10Kt indicated in the History Channel account, possibly approaching ten times that amount.
Multiple attacks would also be used if Washington was a target. If terrorists only had one weapon, an attack on New York, or LA by sea would have greater effect. Weapon could be brought close by boat, detonated proximal. A 40 KT blast would pretty well wipe out lower Manhattan for example.
I believe most nuclear material is out of reach now. Some may have been "sold" before the ex Soviet Union stabilized under Putin. Pakistan is a possible source going forward.

Fissile material possibly available to terrorists is decaying over time reducing its effectiveness for fission. Greater issues are non-nuke dirty bombs, conventional explosive based EMP devices, bio weapons.

All in all the account was a fairly reasonable estimate of what would happen under such circumstances, except one point. Terrorists would spot ahead to make sure most of our top politicians, including the President were in the zone.

It was an interesting program on one hand, but on the other, why do I get this feeling that they're doing a great job of supplying potential terrorists with planning information?

As for the fall-out, I sincerely hope that it would blow east over PG County, and on towards Baltimore.

Too bad that entire "Wiping Out of Congress" scenario can't be solely directed at a few particular idiots in the House.

Is wishing for the death of the leadership of Congress the typical right-wing response to losing elections?

Is supporting and electing likewise ignoramuses simply a leftist liberal's rebellious response to an abusive childhood, or did you just forget who you were voting for come Election Day?

Eventually some guy like The PackLeader will load up a Ryder truck full of nitro-fertilizer and set it off near a government building.

America has seen this behavior before and we'll see it again. Thanks, I guess.

My concern is Dallas or Chicago getting a nuke detonated. All that fallout falling in the Mississippi River has me concerned greatly being as I live in Mississippi.

I'm not a fan of rewarding incompetence. Or do you believe the worst job creation since Hoover and starting and getting mired in two wars are evidence of Republican competence?

Did anyone catch the name of the federal agency that sends in covert teams to detect dirty bombs in the general popualtion before detonation? I can't remember, but I think they said a specific name of the group? Thanks. I don't want to buy the video just to remember this.
