WMAL Shifts Larry O’Conner To PM Drive
November 22, 2016

And that means Michael Savage is out. O’Connor will host a new three-hour weekday afternoon (3-6 p.m.) show on WMAL-AM/FM beginning January 2. He segues from his co-hosting duties on WMAL’s Mornings On The Mall with Brian Wilson. O’Connor has additionally hosted a 5 p.m. EST hour on WMAL-AM/FM since 2014.

Jake McCann, Vice President/Market Manager for Cumulus Media-Washington, D.C. said, “Larry is a super talent in the industry. He’s funny and thought provoking, and his one-hour afternoon show is one of the top-ranked hours in Washington, D.C. It’s a natural progression to expand his afternoon program.”

I listen Savage from 3pm to 5pm in my car and immediately change the station when Oconnor comes on. Sometimes I stream the last hour of Savage over my phone from Talk Stream Live.

Too bad. Savage takes a bit of time and patience to get used to, but his yelling rants that come out of nowhere are funny. O'Conner is a local guy who focuses on local stuff. OK for an hour. Not for 3 though.

I like O'Connor, but he is no Michael Savage. I normally stream Savage from three to five, and switch off the Roanoke FOX affiliate to catch the last hour. I guess I'll just stream the Roanoke station from three to six from mow on.

He has admitted to being gay on the air. He was talking about Justin Bieber, I think, being on Brian's Ipod, and he said "And I thought I was the gay one here!"

He has also refereed to himself as one of the ladies several times. Maybe that is wife his wife out in California divorced him, Maybe that is why he has such a distaste in women, like Shirley Sherod.

I've been listening to Michael Savage since 2006 and tune in daily to his show on WMAL. I can barely get through a segment of Brian & Larry in the morning. They rely on guests and callers to fill their shows and I honestly feel stupid after listening to them.

I'll be turning off my iHeartRadio at 3pm.

I listen to Larry & Brian in the morning, but I tend to switch between them and music and traffic. For some reason, even though he's been married before and he's married now, Larry uses overtones and inflections that make me wonder if he's a closeted homofaggot.

I also listen to Dr. Savage on my drive home. I'm typically in the car from 3-5, but sometimes it takes longer to get home. I've heard Larry's show start up at 5 and, probably only because I hear him in the morning, I just leave him on until I get home. It's also easy to be lazy and leave the radio on that station.

Larry is just ok. He's not the same as Savage. I like variety, not the same thing morning, day & night.

I could never do what any of these people do, but I guess that's why I'm not in the business that they're in.

I guess it's time to start looking to see what kind of deals Sirius has. I used to have it. My wife got it for me right before Howard Stern went there. I kept it for several years, but then I got tired of his show too.

If he's on the air at 5:07 AM what time does he have to be at the station. Also, if he's going to be on until 5, what time does he get home. How does he have any family time? He has children from his first marriage. Does he ever spend time with them? He sounds like an absentee father. Hopefully the children either stay with their maternal mother or maybe the step-mother has outstanding qualities to pick up the slack....

This area amazes me with how people will drop their family for a little money!

Thanks for the note and for listening to WMAL as you have been. We are well aware that we can’t make everyone happy with all of our decisions and we never take these decisions lightly.

The fact is that the 3pm-5pm slot is the least-listened-to daytime slot on WMAL and we have the responsibility to grow our audience. We lose more than a third of the Rush Limbaugh audience after 3pm, and then the numbers grow again in the 5pm hour. So we’re going to expand that 5pm hour into 3pm-6pm and we’re confident our listenership will increase. Larry is leaving the morning show to focus on afternoons.

We hope you’ll come along with us, but we do understand not everyone will be happy with our decision. I do appreciate you sharing your opinion and giving me the opportunity to, at least, explain our decision.

Last week of Savage Nation on WMAL. I have a feeling the show will be back though.

They had best of Chris Plante on this afternoon during the 4:00 - 5:00 time slot. Repeats of Chris Plante are better than 99% of whatever else is one.

A bit of FFU trivia: A rant against Chris Plante is what Mark Webster was posting about when he outed himself using his radiophile name. Still the best outing on FFU.

Savage and OConnor are narcissistic blowhards but OConnor at least has interesting guests. Brian Wilson comes off as a total perv with his talk about women in yoga pants and his hobby of droning which is nothing more than being a Peeping Tom at 50 feet. Chris Plante is really the only thing good at WMAL. He deserves a national show. Rush has been on an endless loop for 10 years - the long term effects of viagra no doubt.

This does sucks alot. I've been a huge savage fan for ten years. He's an amazing personality who is highly educated, unlike loudmouth college dropout rush

I am sure O'Conner is cheaper than Savage... I listen to Savage every day on the 2 hour commute home.. and change the station at 5 when Larry comes on.. he is not as entertaining as Savage, and frankly I am not happy about the change. I'll stream Savage through Pandora or my phone to my car instead

Based on the email from Bill Hess above, Savage loses a massive amount of Rush's lead-in audience and then ratings pick up again at 5:00 when Savage goes off and O'Conner comes back on. It seems a lot of listeners complaining were already tuning out at 5:00 and they just don't add up to enough people to affect ratings.

This is just business and Savage wasn't that good for WMAL's business.

I liked Savage and don't like O'Conner btw. I'll probably just stay on WTOP on the drive home now and listen to traffic and weather on the 8's

I never liked Michael Savage. He was so full of hatred that I believe deep down that he's a Democrat. I've never heard a Conservative speak like that.

The excuse given is a total lie. Savage knew it was coming and was talking about it on his show yesterday. His rating were good and he had the proof. Half hr in they cut him off. I'm done with wmal and the fake conservatives.

Living west of Fairfax, my access to conservative talk radio is limited to WMAL, as I can't get WCBM out of Baltimore or WWDC AM 1260 "the Answer" reliably.

Chris Plante is the man. Congratulations on his new national show starting next week. He may be the most entertaining talker on WMAL, even above and beyond "The Great One".

I've listened to Savage since he was a local host on KSFO in San Francisco in the 90s. His bashing of the Clintons was fantastic. Today, I think he is sort of bipolar; one day, he'll do a great show; and the next day, he'll criticize all the people he praised the day before. I think he was genuinely deflated by the fact that Trump won't go on his show anymore (I suspect that Trump was advised by his team once he won the election not to do talk radio with anyone). Savage strikes me as so inconsistent from day to day that he would be a program director's nightmare.

I have several problems with Larry O'Connor. First, I despise the University of Michigan with every fiber of my being; O'Connor is a "Michigan man", even though he did not attend the school and probably buys his Michigan t-shirts at Walmart. Second, with Michigan's anti-Catholic heritage dating back to the turn of the 20th century with Fielding "Hurry Up" Yost, I can't understand why any believing Catholic could ever root for the "Loserines". O'Connor claims to be a believing Catholic. Third, he has a very effeminate way of speaking. In fairness to him, he seems to be quite hardworking, having employment at other conservative organizations in DC. By moving to afternoons, we won't have to listen to these forced "devil's advocate" segments that he and Brian Wilson did in the mornings.

With respect to Brian Wilson, I like his radio voice; however, he is a so-so local host. WMAL ought to try to lure Sean Casey from WCBM (Sean grey up in Montgomery County), or even someone like Jim Quinn who used to be on the air in Pittsburgh. The best part of the WMAL morning show is when they interview Joe DiGenova and Larry Kudlow--I really like and admire both of them.

The absolute worst part of WMAL are their newscasts and traffic reports. Bill Thompson has a silky smooth radio voice, but his scripts are liberal pablum; also, reporting sports results by mentioning only one team drives me nuts. Jamee Whitten, the traffic reporter, does not have a good radio voice. Also, WMAL's traffic reports are incomplete; listening to them tonight, I was stuck in a 3 mile backup behind an accident which closed both lanes of route 28 north of the Bull Run bridge, and this accident was never mentioned--likewise, a police incident on southbound 395 which caused a snarl was never mentioned--the evening traffic guy reports incidents that happened 2-3 hours prior and never revises his script.

On this subject, Maria Leaf drives me nuts. Between her testosterone laden voice and tripping over every fourth word or so as she attempts to hype her voice, her attempts to be the female David Haines (remember him from the 1980s) fall flat. Also, she barely hides her liberal tendencies. She would be so much more palatable if she gave her reports in a normal conversational voice. As she is, she is awful.

Mark Levin is the "Great One". However, he is getting close to Sean Vanity in the way he pimps CRTV and his various books. One has to subscribe to CRTV to get what Levin brought to the radio table five years ago.

Red Eye Radio is actually pretty good radio if you can get past Gerry McNamara's shouting into the microphone (his partner Eric Harley is much more soft spoken).

This brings us to John Batchelor. I don't know why they have this guy on for four hours every night; why can't they give Savage 9-11 pm and Batchelor 11 pm-1 am.
Batchelor may be Princeton educated (he lets you know this all the time) and have some good guests (like Larry Kudlow), he has the same guests on on the same weeknights every week. Also, he's got a really lispy voice which is frankly unpleasant to listen to.

People may not like Rush as much today as they did in, say, 1993, but he still has the greatest voice in talk radio, and the quality of your voice counts for so much in commercial radio. He has the same problem as Savage--his shows are of inconsistent quality--one day, he is dazzling; another day, I switch over to Andrew Wilkow on Sirius XM.

I was glad to see Savage come on at 3:00 when Sean Hannity left (years ago), but sadden to find out he was only on for two hours. Now O'Connor is on for 3 hours. Bill Hess (VP) thinks this is good. It is not. Whether it's the least listened to time frame or not, Larry O'Connor does not even compare to Savage. Savage is the man. Savage better than Rush and different from Chris Plante with Chris being top notch. Savage will be missed on WMAL.

Great conservative who is thought provoking and has a gift for being very direct, well read and passionate in his beliefs. He occasionally fills in on Red Eye Radio and I've heard him substitute for Rush in the past. He should have a national show. Beats O'Connor at drive time.

Never been a fan of O'connor to be honest. Always got a weird guest host vibe from him, Savage if nothing else was 100% comfortable saying whatever the hell he wanted, the poster above me who several people have said is spot on, is pretty much spot on. Batchelor, to me and no disrespect intended here, is a bit of a bore. Dan Bongino on the other hand I really enjoy listening to, wish they'd throw him on more as a guest host.

Very disappointed that you chose to remove Michael Savage. I looked forward to his show every day and even listened to him while in France. It's a mistake as I am sure you will find out. We donot have many conservative broadcasters and he was to the point even when screaming...that was his frustration of the current administration. He is a brilliant man. I remembered that you once fired Chris Plante...that too was a mistake as you found out. I called and told you so. In a way, I can't blame WMAL. Savage is pretty intense and I usually could only listen to one hour at most. Not that I didn't enjoy that hour, but an hour was enough and I would switch to music. O'Conner is weak and annoying; I won't be listening to MAL when Rush goes off. When I get a chance to listen, I hang on every word that Chris Plante says, he is witty, insightful, and entertaining. I would love to hear him on afternoon drive.

OK, I never thought savage would last as long as he did on the air let alone DC. I used to think he was a narcissist, arrogant, self-promoting bag of hot air. Now I KNOW he is all those. Good for a laugh but geez, hard on the ears. Larry, great but not for 3 hours. Chris Plante deserves prime time drive more than Larry. He is hilarious.

I like Chris Plante, Rush, and Levin the best. Savage's show was unpredictable, much like his moods. Savage is interesting; he's educated, cosmopolitan and wise, but his stream of consciousness style, curmudgeon-i-ness and penchant for conspiracy theories were a turn off at times (literally).
I can't deal with the "Mornings on the Mall" show at all.The chemistry between Wilson and O'connor is all wrong--well, quite frankly, there is no chemistry. They sound like my two dull neighbors droning on whilst sitting on my deck, that is, until they have a few beers then they're much more fun to listen to.
I'm sure Larry O'Connor is a great guy, but he's too bland for my taste. I like Sean Hannity on TV; his radio show is nothing but commercials and an ad for his FOX tv show. Dan Bongino is a fantastic, vibrant host. Would like to hear more of him.

I will miss Dr. Savage in the afternoon. I really enjoyed his rants; nobody could do it better. Larry is ok. His 5 to 6 p.m. show was always background noise to me. I liked him teamed with Brian Wilson. They played well off each other's personalities. If he's going to carry the other afternoon hours, he'll need to take notes from Chris Plante.

I live in Norther Virginia. I listened to Michael Savage from 3 to 5 p.m. As soon as I hear Larry O'Connor come on, I change stations. Now the only person I'll listen to on WMAL is Chris Plante.

This is what they did to Coast to Coast AM few years back, that I'm still pissed off about. George Nory was on some DC station I think it was 1260AM going from 1 to 5 AM and everything was good. Then WMAL brings him over to their station and almost from the start cuts the show back 2 hours. Ending at 3AM, when everybody who listens to Coast to Coast AM knows the last hours get really weird and creepy. Then they drop the whole show and nobody in DC picked it up. WTF. It is only the best late night radio show in America. Can't anyone in DC pick it up. Notice I said America, cause now I only listen to RED ICE RADIO from Sweden.

The only reason I started listening to WMAL is because of Savage. I turned on the radio yesterday at my usual time 3 o'clock and realized Savage has been replaced by Larry. I gave Larry about 5 minutes of my time (BOOORRRIIINNGG!!), that's the last 5 minutes WMAL will receive from me unless they bring back Savage. The guy won the radio hall of fame WTH are they thinking.

After Cris Plant, I would wait anxiously for Savage nation. I am very sad he off the air however I try to listen to him on other radio stations. Shame on WMAML.

Add me to the list of disappointed WMAL listeners in taking Michael Savage off and putting in Larry O'Connor. He is like white noise and was bearable in mornings when one is not quite awake. Savage is the best in radio and I could have listened to him from 3-6. I too will leave WMAL after Rush and stream Savage on his San Francisco station. Your ratings will suffer with O'Connor. He is no Savage.

Chris Plante will be big nationally and it will be hysterical to hear you haters call him - please do his ratings will grow and he will take your call, he loves it and I will too.

When Savage came on WMAL I listened for a while and grew to dislike him more each time even though I agree with many things he said. "liberalism is a mental disorder" is my favorite". Within 6 months WMAL had totally lost my 3pm. Too pompus and arrogant - smart, accomplished people do not have to walk around saying they how smart they are you can tell by listening to them. Having the highest ratings do not get you the boot. So just stream what you want as I did when I got sick of him.

I called the station a few weeks after he started and politely expressed my view, suggesting to either take him off or put him in some very late night fringe spot like coast to coast was. They said they were aware of the problem and working on it. Probably a contractual thing they had to keep him this long but at the time I thought it was just PR and my feedback does not matter. So maybe I think it did along with the ratings issue.

Brian and Larry are both bad, like mediocre fill ins. It would be nice if Larry was just a placeholder for someone good - Dan Bongino would be good but Larry certainly will not last.

I'm listening now and he's said "Lunch Bucket Joe" five times in the last five minutes. If I were playing the game I would be drunk before noon.

Plante also has the annoying habit of laughing at his own jokes, especially the lame ones.

For years I listened to Tom Marr in the mornings via the internet (WCBM-680, but the signal is weak). Unfortunately he died last July. Bruce Elliot has the time slot now. He is ok but no Tom. Of course both talked about Maryland issues far more than WMAL talkers do. I usually tuned out on those days.

Plante has his good days but his act is pretty thin much of the time. I seldom listen to more than an hour.

Michael Savage sometimes was very entertaining. I've never heard better rants. However, he tended to talk too much about himself, especially his books, but I'd take him over Larry any day.

Thank heavens!!! So glad they replaced that self-involved bore with the knowledgeable, witty, and articulate O'Connor. I'll miss him, though, on the a.m. show with Brian Wilson -- they complemented each other so well. Hoping Brian holds out for a good "alongsider."

I listened to Savage back in the 90s - I really liked his unorthodox take on current events and he helped me see my way from a flaming lib to conservative. Now I see him being more of a boorish narcissist with a sprinkle of insightful thought provoking ideas - still worth listening to from my perspective. I will be looking to stream his show on the drive home.

Don't want to disparage the other talk show hosts. I will add my voice to those that are praising Chris Plante. He says things that I am thinking but can't put into words and, yes, he is a stich. Think: "things I'd like to say during Thanksgiving diner to my lib family."

Will not tune in WMAL anymore. Savage nation is the only show I listen on WMAL. Now I will just stream them on youtube around 7pm after they upload the commercial free shows.

WMAL needed the Doctor and so did I, it seems like the people who make decisions regarding their choices of talk hosts may need a different kind of doctor, possibly getting their heads examined pulling Michael Savage who provided me with something to look forward to daily during my commute home. I would often stay at work until the show started and many times would be in my driveway after arriving home getting the segment finished. That is hard to accomplish and a terrible self inflicted blow to WMAL in my opinion. Mr Savage had an approach and perspective that was not status quo and that is what to me made him that guy who was my go to "home run" radio host. Wow, I am at a loss regarding this poor choice and I hope another station somehow gets him back on for his DC MD VA fan base and really for that any person listener who may not agree with all said and the views but Michael provided that bandwidth change from the standard garbage can variety rhetoric that is served in "Trumps" across the radio dial. Thank you Michael for the years I did get to know you and the insight from a guy who cut across the standard grain that others usually follow because it is easily the safe and comfortable thing to do going with the lets not offend anyone mindset. WMAL sucks. Larry was tolerable in the morning. Not in the afternoon as a Savage replacement. I'm dumping WMAL except for Chris Plante and Brian Wilson is tolerable in the morning. Larry was okay with Brian. Getting rid of Savage is a huge mistake and I am seeking solace elsewhere on the dial. What a bunch of schmuks.

I am sad to see Michael Savage go. I enjoy listening to him and Chris Plante with Chis Plante being my favorite, but I find Michael Savage refreshingly honest and entertaining. Why have you taken Michael Savage off the 3-5 PM time? He was informative and is a learned man. We, me and my husband, enjoyed the show very much 5 days a week. I have not heard any explanation why this action was taken.
We are NOT impressed with the replacement show. Please let us know the reason why he has taken off the air so abruptly? We enjoy Chris Plant and Rush Limbaugh, but we do not appreciate censorship in our radio, or the new show that replaced Savage Nation.

WMAL could have notify the listeners in advance. Courtesy to your listeners (customers) should be your top priority, but taking off the Savage Nation changed the priority for your listeners. You could also let us know what stations in Maryland carry the Savage Nation show.

The costs to broadcast Savage Nation is $150K per hour per year plus concessions of time so he can plug whatever the hell he's hawking. WMAL was broadcasting two hours so that's $300K a year plus free air time of 8 minutes per hour.

They can get O'Conner for 2/3rds of that cost and give up no air time for advertising. And Savage's ratings on WMAL weren't that great. Bottom line, this is a move about money, not content.

Savage isn't coming back. Find him on iheartradio if you must listen to him.

What a TRAGIC mistake to take Michael Savage off WMAL. I have been a long time listener to Michael and he is the only one who speaks the truth and will SAY IT LIKE IT IS--NO BS. I will no longer be tuning in to WMAL at that particular time slot that you took away. The only other talk show host I do listen to is Chris Plante--but he is no Michael Savage! I live in eastern WV and used to listen to Savage on WMAL until 5. Miss him very much. Gave Larry a try and his show is terrible and a bore for someone living outside metro DC. Now I listen to Hannity on a local PA station. I'll even listen to WAVA 105.1 before I'll listen to Larry's show. Vince, Chris and Mark Levin are the only ones worth listening to on WMAL. Hope Savage is brought back for his entire 3-6 show!
