Meals Tax Rejected

Not all precincts have reported, but at this point it appears the Meals Tax is headed for defeat by a 56-44 margin. Similar proposals were held in at least three other Virginia jurisdictions with two of those also headed for defeat.

The good news is it appears we won't have a Meals Tax in the near future. The bad news is the fight isn't over. There is talk that County Officials may seek permission from the General Assembly to impose a meals tax without a referendum. There is also no guarantee that either the BOS or the School Board will take the referendum vote as an indication they need to re-evaluate spending priorities.

The General Assembly will in its current form will NEVER approve implementing a meals tax without voter approval. They would be more inclined to approve another broader form of taxation which is what the BOS and School Board should seek from the General Assembly. As for the re-evaluation of their spending priorities, there were indications that current plans would be altered if the meals tax was not passed.

There is a viable path for the School Board. Reevaluate the supplemental pension plan, replace it with a less expensive defined contribution plan and restructure the teachers pay schedule by improving pay in teachers years 5-15 using the savings from the pension plan restructuring. Teacher pay problem fixed!

That's even with the very favorable wording and the math mistake calculating the percentage that they didn't correct.

I'm not sure that they can do a meal tax without a referendum these days. At least as the law now is written.

§ 58.1-3833

County food and beverage tax

...

This tax shall be levied only if the tax is approved in a referendum within the county which shall be held in accordance with § 24.2-684 and initiated either by a resolution of the board of supervisors or on the filing of a petition signed by a number of registered voters of the county equal in number to 10 percent of the number of voters registered in the county, as appropriate on January 1 of the year in which the petition is filed with the court of such county.

If Trump wins, FCPS will lose at least 5,000 immigrant students.

That's a big step toward a balanced budget and improved test scores.

No meals tax needed.
