Meals Tax Referendum on November 8 Ballot
On October 4, members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and the FCPS School Board met to provide their budget forecasts for Fiscal Year 2018 (2017-18 school year) and to discuss the upcoming meals tax referendum. If there is no revenue from a meals tax, and no increase to the County transfer, FCPS is projecting an estimated $134 million budget gap for FY 2018.
If approved, the meals tax is estimated to generate approximately $99 million in the first year. Seventy percent of the net revenues (approximately $67 million) would be dedicated to Fairfax County Public Schools, and 30 percent would be dedicated to county services, capital improvements, and property tax relief.
