Meals Tax Referendum on November 8 Ballot
On October 4, members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and the FCPS School Board met to provide their budget forecasts for Fiscal Year 2018 (2017-18 school year) and to discuss the upcoming meals tax referendum. If there is no revenue from a meals tax, and no increase to the County transfer, FCPS is projecting an estimated $134 million budget gap for FY 2018.
If approved, the meals tax is estimated to generate approximately $99 million in the first year. Seventy percent of the net revenues (approximately $67 million) would be dedicated to Fairfax County Public Schools, and 30 percent would be dedicated to county services, capital improvements, and property tax relief. $134 million less $67 million (IF it passes) = $67 million dollars raised via increases in real estate taxes.
Because the FCPS budget is already "cut to the bone"...lol...so no savings to be had there.
But let's ask the auditor, just to confirm.
