Real answer? Too close to U.S. Thanksgiving. But yes, in terms of the significance of the day, it would make more sense.

Since New York used to be the source of most U.S. culture, that makes sense. Then. Now, not so much; that page does have a big section on the controversy.
Bottom line: at this point, most people don't even know why it's a holiday; it's just there. Not likely to change, though renaming it to something else would make sense.
