Colleges Want Applications

For High school Seniors, are you receiving a lot of cold calls from colleges? We receive up to three a night now. The pitch is like this: We will waive the application fee and essay if you just fill out our short application form.

Wondering whether this is just marketing that everyone receives.

Are they really interested? Or do they just want a pile of applications?

Some will send letters also. For some reason, several of them came from the journalism school of the colleges.

A lot of them do it so they can get a mass of applications, mostly to reject. They do this so they can claim that they are an in demand institution and are highly selective. The more competitive the application process, the more prestigious the institution is often perceived to be. Virginia Tech is one example of these schools. VT is good for engineering and hard sciences, but little else, it's in an awful location and does not produce many scholars.

Ivy league schools are also guilty of this practice. I had a friend who got calls, brochures and emails from Schools like Yale and Dartmouth. He barely had a 2.6 gpa. It would be laughable under normal circumstances to think he had a chance getting into a school like that, but he was encouraged and applied anyway. Needless to say, he spent his 80 dollars and the 2-4 hours it took filling out the application and writing the essays for nothing.

To start, I have no interest or ties to Tech.
But I'm certain you applied and weren't accepted.

VT is also known for the Corps of Cadets with a large list of decorated military officers in its alumni. There's like 7 Medal of Honor recipients.

Go look up the notable alumni, CEOs of Exxon, Siemens, Georgia Pacific, Qualcomm; Presidents of Texas A&M, Georgia Tech, James Madison

Wherever you matriculated clearly didn't produce a scholar from you.

We're also seeing the higher education bubble burst. People are realizing that $50k/year colleges and $100k in student loans just aren't worth it when the jobs waiting for graduates pay $40k/year.

the CEO of ExxonMobil is Rex Tillerson, a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin (UT-A) - not VT

Tech is not in an awful location and is actually rated one of the best in student life on campus recently and the food it top notch. Academically it has a lot of good options as well.

If you have not visited lately, I can assure you that the campus is very nice and MANY, MANY hard core alums return for many reasons. I was sitting with an Alum from 1968 that visits 4 times a year and is currently living in NJ.

VA Tech has a lot of good things going for it, do not turn your nose up at it.

If you or your family members are looking at schools, check it out, if it is not for you, move on because they have plenty of other people willing and waiting to get in.

So the dude is 70 years old, retired, has nothing but time on his hands and his fondest memories in life are the four years he was at Tech? He probably did not amount to shit after graduation, hated his job until he retired and the only pleasure he gets out of life is thinking back to the 1960's. That's a fucking wonderful story that any aspiring Tech student should take to heart.

Demographics are changing. There was a bulge in high school graduates for some years (the millennials), but now there are fewer high school graduates. So the law of supply and demand is coming into play. It's a good time to be entering college. Also the game to have a lower percentage of yield is being played (to look more prestigious in the stats).
