Panhandling

Is it just me, or does County firefighters panhandling at traffic lights piss anybody off?

With the frigging taxes around here, why are they out there walking around in traffic with a boot?

They're collecting money for MDA. It's the main charity for firefighters all across the U.S. Tax money has nothing to do with them collecting money for their charity.

What, do you think they're out there trying to collect money to buy new trucks or something? Moron.

It probably should bother me but it doesn't. Gives them something to do rather than sitting in the fire house watching TV.

If you notice, they are the Vol Fire Departments. The people that provide our community support because they care!

Actually, it is the CAREER firefighters in Fairfax County who man the 'Fill the Boot' locations for Jerry's kids and MDA. Volunteer fire companies in FXCO us a variety of fundraising activities (e.g., letter campaigns, bingo), but this is not one of them. That money is primarily used to purchase apparatus and equipment to supplement what the county provides in each house. At FS14 in Burke, for example, the VFD owns the engines, rescue squad and EMS units.

Actually I don't mind this panhandling. If the firemen need new boots then people could donate what they can. What really bothers me - and what is truly panhandling - are those gypsy women who wait in the Giant food shopping center lots and hand you some note written in broken English. They are asking for food for their babies and the gypsy moms all look too old to have a baby. I think they just want to hustle people for money.

I met a hustling Santa Claus outside the old Centreville giant by the library. He was in a santa suit with a white beard and stuff, with a bell, saying donate to the salvation army...but he was mexican (probably from sunset knolls apts) and he was raking it in. No pot or anything. I came by 1 hour later and the same guy is pushing a shopping cart filled to the top with beer/liquor.

Okay, I'm a moron, but I still don't understand County employees hustling for ANY charity. MDA is a middling charity to boot...about 25 cents of every dollar collected goes to "fundraising and administrative" expenses. Does the Fire Dept get a cut? It's unlikey that old jew Jerry is working for free.

I had hoped somebody would address the legality of this....could me and my buddies walk around in traffic collecting money? I think the old squeegee kids thing is illegal. Anybody know?

If one of them gets run over....do the taxpayers support him/her for the rest of his/her life just as if they were injured fighting a fire?

The only thing that bothers me about it that they'll have people stationed at multiple intersections close together, so you can get hit up by them two lights in a row.

It's not like they're harrassing people, knocking on windows or anything. If you don't roll down your window or engage them they'll just keep on walking by.

Personally, I hate getting hit up by the Girl Scouts for cookies the second I walk out of Giant. I do enjoy Peanut Butter Patties, but if I want them that bad I'll find you.

Dude if you ever see a mexican santa doing that shit...Call police so they can escort his ass to jail for doing that shit....

I would rather beat his ass but then he would bring 20 of his essays with him.

I was thinking this the other day while sitting at Rt. 123 and International Dive. Panhandlers on the median strips at that intersection everyday last week. Good job Fairfax!
