Long Fence is ridiculous, major rip-off artists.
I had a residential fence (Herndon) built with Armor Fence, www.armorfenceco.com - (703) 361-1141.
These guys installed a new fence in one day for about $2700 (Long wanted double that).

If you are looking for a wooden fence, I would go with Northern Virginia Decking. They are priced compeitively and the quality and attention to detail is fantastic. We have used them on a few projects and on each project bid the job out to different contractors...

Dominion fence did a great job on our fence. They were much cheaper than Long fence's quote, they finished in one day and the fence still looks brand new 3 years later.

It depends on how 'long' you want it to last. I'm not affiliated with the company but Long Fence makes a superior product that literally lasts forever. If you will be keeping the fenced property invest in quality. There are lots of cheaper companies but the fences don't last. I'm happy with my Long Fence. My neighbor has some crummy off brand that keeps collapsing in my yard.

Building a fence isn't rocket science. You just need to make sure they use pressure treated lumber, quality hardware, fence caps, etc. I'm sure some companies have a few dipshits that will cut corners and do a crappy job, but the fact is "it's not that hard to build a fence". As long as you have a signed contract with all your specs and you have seen or heard good things about their reputation, it really comes down to who can do a good job for the least amount of money. Long Fence may build a decent fence, but they are also the most expensive fence builders in the area.
Some extra features you may want to include in the contract are: You may want to use 6x6's at the threshold of any doors for added strength, you may also want to use 3 hinges instead of two on any doors to help prevent the door from sagging. Good Luck.

I can second Carter Fence (Brothers). A friend recommended them and they did a great job for us at a good price. After installation I called to have my gate adjusted and they took care of it the same day.

I did use metric handyman. From burke or alexandria. Is been 10 years and still in good standing.
I do think nowe they may only do Fire restoration metric handyman . I saw a new fence in mount vernon

I recommend Long Dong's Fence. My wife wanted a big adjustment and they delivered. Their poles are longer than the competitions and they don't sag prematurely. They drilled my hole better than all the others and I was completely satisfied after being serviced by them.

We use PowerHouse Remodeling whenever a customer needs fences as we don't do them at DreamHome.
I know it's not their main service, as they're primarily a deck company, but they will do fences. It's best to get a few estimates anyhow.

We used Carter Fence, too. Something like 1/2 the Long Fence price. Worked with a fellow named Jason -- very helpful and came out to our house 3 separate time to help us figure out how we wanted things laid out.

DO NOT USE TRIPLE K FENCING. WORSE CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER EXPERIENCED IN MY LIFE. THEY DO NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR WORK WHATSOEVER. FENCE WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE 1 3/4 SPACING AND DIDN'T EVEN COME CLOSE. CALLED MY WIFE STUPID FOR NOT KNOWING THAT WOOD SHRINKS.

I can honestly say that going with any of the choices above would be better than Long Fence - they are the absolute WORST. We were afraid to go with an independent builder and wanted a "namebrand" - what a mistake.
The Long Fence people are complete idiots. If you get assigned someone named Marion Randolph, run for the hills. Seriously.
They will cash your checks long before you ever hear from them to schedule your project.
Trust me - go with any other company before paying these fools.

We used Carter Fence last month. Good product. They took a while, but the job was done well and the fence looks great.
They were about 40% less than Long Fence.

I had Longs build fences at two homes and they went in great. The Weathershield type of lumber held up much better than my neighbors fences. If they were in Colorado they would replace the junk that is in my yard now.

I second NVDeck.com. They did my deck and fence. The owner is very responsive and flexible. I had the fire dept out a few months back due to some compressor issues with my heat pump and they complimented me on the quality of work.

I gave Carter a $2,000 deposit check so that they could special order cedar for my fence. They took the check and we signed the contract. An agent returned to show me a 4" slat of cedar. First, the quality has horrible. Second, the contract specified 6" slats. I called and emailed Mike Carter. He has not responded. I left him a voice mail today asking for my money back. If I don't here from him tomorrow, I will file a claim in the small claims court, the BBB, the Arlington Chamber of Commerce and tell my story via the internet.

Mr. Carter: We interviewed 4 companies before asking you to do our fence. We liked your fences and professional approach to service. However, when we had questions about the cedar and the size of the planks, we called and emailed you repeatedly. We got no response and that lead me to believe that you had disappeared with our $2,000 deposit. The questions can and were answered yesterday but if I can't talk to you, I can't just trust that things will work out fine. I am sure that you understand. They were about $800 cheaper than Long Fence.
They came out around 2pm and were finished around 6pm. The fence looks great.
I recommend Armor Fence 100%. Very easy experience and very reasonable price.

Its not complicated work. Its hard work though - a lot of fence post digging and sawing. You need to be mindful of 1) buried utilities and 2) property lines.
Accokeek Fences are great. Anybody have a recommendation for paver installation?

We finally settled on Accokeek Fences. Number one quality, excellent service, prompt response and reasonable prices. Now, I need someone to come in and fix the techo bloc installation from Hell. First the contractor blamed the polymeric sand, then the weather, then the county inspector (we didn't need a permit so what does an inspector have to do with ponding water and bad drainage?), then he blamed the condition of the site (apparently my back yard was not ready for him but he charged $15,000 for the job after seeing the site). Of course, I already paid him in full. The job is falling apart, steps are uneven and dangerous, sand has disappeared, but he is willing to do "touch-up work". Well, you can put lipstick on a pig, but she is still a pig. So, if anyone knows an experienced techo-bloc installer willing to come in and give me an estimate for pulling everything out and starting over again, please let me know.

DO NOT EMPLOY CARTER FENCE! I had them do a mundane project like build me a gate and they were a nightmare to deal with. On top of that the owner of the company, Mr Carter, insulted my wife. Would you go with a company that does this? Unfortunately I dont have any suggestions. Just stay away from Carter Fence. I do agree that Long Fence charges too much for what you actually get. My neighbor used them and wasnt impressed.

Do not use Fairfax Fence. They did a poor job, I asked them for a discount and then they pulled a legal move and put a lien on our house within a week of sending us the bill! Nasty people who are ready to rough you up.

Used to work for one the aforementioned fence companies. ALL OF THEM will likely offer their highest estimate/price that can be negotiated. Long Fence is a good example. There are some previous customers that felt they received the best deal... other's did not feel that way for Long Fence. The initial price is ALWAYS negotiable.
Aside from pricing... you need to negotiate the product, installation parameters and time-line for installation in the written contract.

I just used Texas Rock and fence (http://texasrockandfence.com) and was very happy. A written estimate that covered everything, and they were on time and actually a little under budget.
We ended up with an 8' board on board design in cedar. It wasn't cheap but it's really beautiful.

Nope...worst customer service I've every experienced. I brought an expensive wooden fence a few years ago and the manufactured warranty for the post was supposed to be life time (according to my contract). Two Posts have keeled over at the base like they were made of paper...called Long Fence and am told that not only do I have to pay for the new posts, but $100 for them to dig the hole. I'm told that the warranty doesn't cover warping, the warranty state lifetime warranty on post. I would never use Long Fence VA again ever.

I know most stockade fences are 6' high. I recall being told once that the County regulatoin is that they can't be more than 7'. I think that's what I was told, anyone know if that's accurate?

ie, get a nice wood fence from lumber yard
long fence is expensive but they do hold up for quite a white and are a good company to deal with. they didn't get to look like that for nothing good fences took many shapes and forms until a winner was found.

Without a doubt the best fence company around is catlett construction. I got multiple quotes and theirs blew all others out of the water! The work was done fast, by english as a first language guys, the quality is excellent, the customer service was personal and thorough. Catlett construction built this fence for us two years ago and it is as beautiful today as the day they built it and just as strong too! The quality of work and attention to detail is truely unmatched. We would never use anyone else sine we found them! We got quotes from all the major companies Long, Builders, triple k, Lowes and a few smaller companies Aspen, All American, NOVA, and Catlett. They were by far the most personable and knowledgable and the best priced. We liked that they were a small local family owned and operated company, they communicated with us every step of the way and the guy who came out to do the estimate is the same guy who installed the fence! Long companies suck. I had contacted them for replacement windows and I was quoted over 3 times the going rate. I had made a major mistake in having them come to the house for an estimate. A scheduled 1 hour sales call turned into a 3 hour plus ordeal. I finally had to threaten the salesman before he would leave, the sum-bitch just would not go away. Apparently their sales tactics call for wearing down the customer. They then phoned for days even after I told them not to. About 2 weeks later some other Long salesman just showed up for a "follow up". I slammed the door in his face. My advice is to never, ever even consider using Long for anything much less get a quote. You will thank me later.

I'm 100% Catlett Construction our neighbor used them and recommended them to us. We got 3 other quotes to be thorough one from armour, one from my fence, and one from Arlington fence too and we found that Catlett fence had the best warranty, the best customer service and responsiveness, the most up front and honest and by far the best price! Our fence is beautiful and so is our neighbors. Highly recommend
