Metro Ruining Traffic in Fairfax

Traffic is screwed today and every day now thanks to the Metro screw-up. Get used to failing infrastructure under Republican cuts to funds to maintain and repair our transit system. More profits for business and the ultra wealthy but for the rest of us its tighten you belts. Super

That article is over a year old. Also, the cut was what came out of the House transportation committee and the funds were re-appropriated to other transportation projects. And the funding cuts didn't happen as it was stripped from the final GOP budget sent to the president.

Metro just 'invested' $5 billion to upgrade and repair over the past 5 years. Where the hell did that money go cause it sure didn't go to upgrades and repairs?

Why should people in California pay for upkeep of a DC transit system? Let the people in the DC region pay more in taxes for it. The federal government already pays $150 million a year. That doesn't include the $100 million plus that the federal government gives to federal workers through subsidies that are used for Metro.

You appear to suffer from a severe case of dumbass. Please don't post until you get cured.

I love how the jerks that said "I drive who cares about public transit" all of a sudden care.

Can't wait until all the bridges around the area get shutdown for maintenance and repairs. That's going to be a real cluster F.

In that case they should charge $20 for a new SmartTrip card. Regular commuters would only pay this once, while tourists would pay this for each family member. That way the tourists that don't live here will share the costs and eliminate the lame "California" argument. As if California isn't getting this region's tax dollars for projects, lame.

Don't care what they charge for smarttrip cards so go for it. Charge the tourists $100 for all I care. They'll all take Uber and Metro will still have no money.

Why should CA residents pay for Metro? Saying that the question is lame isn't an answer, it's a dodge. Stop dodging and answer the question or don't reply. Only the DC region benefits from Metro directly. We should pay for that benefit. Anything paid for by the federal government gets 25% added on to pay for the federal overhead.

It was answered. One can't be this dense but I'll bite. Go to this page, every one of those gets federal funding. So unless the DC area is populated by low-income, non-taxpayers it is paying toward California crap we'll rarely or never use.

Actually, the headline projects were associated with escalator and elevator repair and replacement. Remember how all the usual whiners went off over how difficult it was over all those months to get up and down at Dupont Circle as the result of that work? Useless dweebs!

> Why should people in California pay for upkeep of

For the same reason that people in DC pay to maintain California highways and to repair damage done by earthquakes, mudslides, and wildfires that occur in California. Do you just not understand how the world works?

> Let the people in the DC region pay more in taxes for it.

People in the DC region pay all the same taxes that people elsewhere pay. They have no less of a stake in things as the result. Metro should indeed be funded differently however. There should be a dedicated regional tax that bypasses all these politicians and goes directly to Metro. Almost every other transit system in the country has such a revenue source, but head-in-the-sand morons don't want that here. They'd rather have THIS. And then they complain about it.

> The federal government already pays $150 million a year.

The program ends June 30, 2016.

Benefits are used for such as MARC, VRE, commuter buses, and vanpools as well. And after all, it is much cheaper to have people using some form of mass transit to commute than it is to tolerate the silly notion of one person driving to and from work every day while having to store a car somewhere all day in order to accomplish it. Then of course there are the environmental savings of keeping as many cars off the roads as possible.

Your post was among the dumber ones I've seen on this topic.

METRO was never well planned. Built like all of DC. Go in and Go out. Not from Home to most jobs.

All other subways have a third track. Not DC. Duh.

Solutions in NOVA? $14 tolls to foreign companies to go six miles.

And, 6 lanes to 4 at a major bridge owned by another state? Duh Duh.

Fix 66 with tolls and keep the cash this time? Great Richmond.

Why does Richmond have loop around the city? Oh, that's right. The crooks work there.

METRO was PLANNED just fine -- it was never well FUNDED. Given the choice, one would always prefer two tracks on a larger number of lines over more tracks on a smaller number of lines. But METRO never had the funding to do either one. The Orange and Blue lines should never have shared the same tracks through downtown. The Yellow and Green lines shouldn't either. But there was no functional alternative. It was a case of build today what we can afford to build today, and we'll have to upgrade it all at some point later on.

> All other subways have a third track. Not DC. Duh.

There are actually very few systems in the world that run more than 2-tracks, and the ones that do (NYC, Chicago, and Philadelphia are examples) do so over certain routes and special sections only. And the primary reason that large systems like NYC have express tracks is not to run express trains, but because the population density is so high that it forces them to run so many LOCAL trains that stop every 3-4 blocks. METRO has many stations that are literally miles from the next one. Trains running there are all express trains by definition.

Metro carries all the Fed commuters into work. The Federal government should pay more for Metro

LOL. $5 billion to repair escalators and elevators. You're too retarded to not see the idiocy of that and doubley too retarded to actually believe it.

Any post that requires more than two brain cells to comprehend is going to appear dumb to a retard like you.

Trusting Metro's bullshit and thinking their problems are too little money. LOL, what an idiot.
