What is the real "culture" of Northern Virginia?
Posted by: who are we? ()
Date: May 15, 2016 01:17PM

You know how every major region in the US has its unique culture? Unique accent, unique sayings, unique personality, type of music people listen to, style of clothing people wear, typical fun activities, etc. Well, ever since I moved here years ago people from where I used to live ask me what people are like here and I honestly can't give an answer. I don't see any people who come here (both immigrants and transplants) assimilating into a particular culture.

Look at a place like the tri state area around New York. There's the accent and typical brusque attitude, everyone's very fashionable, and people like to try the latest and greatest trends. Everyone who lives there adopts a part of that culture, even if they come from a very culturally different place.

So my question is, what is (or was) the real culture of Northern Virginia and why did it seemingly disappear?

None.

It's a cultural black hole.

You can find pockets of various cultures here . . . in the Central American apartments it's Spanish and pupusas. Along the Pentagon busline you've got military culture. Some of the cultures are probably related to churches people attend.

There's probably a bit of "government worker" culture . . . whatever that is.

Mostly, it's work, work, work and then retire somewhere else where there is a culture.

Their is no culture here. Everyone goes around saying "in my country."

It's all the foreigners that have moved here.

Doesn't even have enough character to be called a cesspool.

Prior to the government and immigration boom that seemed to have begun in the mid-90s, what was it really like around here? Did people act more southern or more northern? Were people polite? What did people do for fun?

Prior to the government jobs in DC brining in transplants and immigrants, Nova was like the rest of VA, mostly Southern and conservative leaning attitudes and rural landscape. A farming community, for the most part. The rise of suburban neighborhoods really destroyed the pre-existing culture. I am the child of transplant parents who moved here from up North to make money. I hate it here, the area slowly sucks the passion and zest for life right out of you. The culture here now, of you could even call it that, is one of materialism and snobby better than thou demeanor. Fuck Nova.

Total Government worker culture. That's our best claim to "fame".

Overeducated, overpaid, under intelligent, underachieving, completely uninteresting, incapable people.

It's like fucking purgatory.

And Asians.

And Central Americans.

This^

NoVA is typical American upper middle class suburban consumer culture. Mostly found outside major US cities.

The culture of Northern Virginia died about 30 years ago.

What we have now is a self centered shithole.

There isn't any. Nova and DC lack any watermarks specific to the area.

No shit. Aren't we blessed with this mishmash 3rd world culture? Its so enriching what the liberals have done here. This whole "ethnic pride" thing is a complete joke. Oh yea, "In my country", but yet they refuse to live in their own country, that is made up of, and comprised mostly of people of their own race. I also love all the gang violence and constant fear of my families lives.

America the great is fading away. I've been saying it for years...

You mean "pretend to work", "pretend to work", "pretend to work", and then retire with a great pension paid for with tax money stolen from people who actually work for a living.

LOL! So, somehow you let these slowpokes beat you out of all the jobs with good salaries and benefits? Maybe you're not quite as smart as you think you are.

The culture here is one characterized by pockets of active, educated, creative bohemian tolerance, played off against pockets of stagnant, lackluster, dull-brained, redneck intolerance. Obviously, the key to success here is to go live among the former while avoiding the latter insofar as that is possible.

It's changed so much, for better or worse over my time here. "Virginian" culture is long gone in Fairfax, about 700,000 people have moved here since I was a kid. It's still alright, but it's not great. Don't think anyplace is perfect though, just ask a local, right? I consider this county one big ol' low-rise city. Kind sucks actually. But back to the topic at hand, it's such a mishmash of people from everywhere that there isn't a colloquial culture here anymore. For better or worse again, but I hope when I go I die in Virginia, not Fairfax.

Only things I'm really aware of slang wise is calling cigs Jacks. The best person to ask about nova culture prob would be asking someone that went to college in Virginia, but is not from nova (They would have a lot of exposure to Northern Virginias who are not in their natural habitat). I went to ODU for a short time and got the vibe that people from other areas had stereotypes about students from Northern Virginia.

Wow racism is just oooooozing out from everyone in this thread, eh?!

Anyway the culture has changed but like all things in life there are pros and cons. Its definitely become a melting pot where you get to see the good from people that are different than you, but you also have to tolerate the bad.

Honestly I don't care where you're originally from as long as you have enough awareness to be considerate to your neighbors. Keep your place relatively clean, don't fucking cause noise nuisance between 10:30pm -7:00am, curb your fucking dog instead of letting them roam free no matter how "friendly" your dog is, and respect each other. Not that difficult to do but g'damn the small rotten fuckers ruin it for a lot of people.

As a hub of transience, NOVA lacks a distinct culture of its own.

Rather, NOVA is a rich milieu of the native cultures of all people who call it home, for however brief a time, continually shaped and influenced by change.

Everyone's racist, just honkeys arent allowed to show it. Its also strange to see your own neighborhood change so quickly.

put the pipe down.

much of this area was rural/semi-rural. the farmland was purchased in bulk and developed as cookie-cutter suburbia, fueled by government-supported jobs and credit. that's to say, tract housing built to start falling apart as the warranty expires and sold at enough of a premium to ensure mortgage slaves are well-tethered. real estate prices are high enough to keep oddball mom-and-pop businesses out. altogether, this makes NoVA institutionalized, homogenized and pasteurized. ("diversity" notwithstanding)

here and there, you might find exceptions to help numb the soul-sucking sensation, but a "rich milieu" isn't how i'd describe it.

that said, bang for the buck, options for life in this area are hardly some hellish line-up of vile shit as they are elsewhere. yes, it's a cesspool, but swallowing it is still a choice, even when swimming isn't. it is eminently possible to keep the bullshit on the outside.

if you don't have a degree indicating high likelihood of ability/willingness to swim in the cesspool, and you're a special snowflake, so mommy/daddy kept you away from anything in the line of trades... well, you're probably fucked. low-skilled McJobs are impacted by healthcare costs, so schedules are adjusted accordingly. cobbling together enough hours to pay for shared housing, shit restaurant food ('cause baking "gourmet" cupcakes doesn't count!) and transportation to shuffle between those McJobs is a bitch.

There is no definitive culture inside any major metro areas any more.
The filthy rich and our government that is in bed with them have ensured it. Because, along with this assured separatism, the ancient political play of the divide and conquer rule of the overall majority of the population also ensures them their control of the extreme wealth they have and will always have.
Levaing the rest of us the tender scraps to fight over like dogs.
