What was that huge noise in West Springfield at midnight?

Sounded light a supersonic freight train or something or the terraforming machine in the 'Man of Steel' movie. The police heard it, but they didn't know where it was coming from either.

That sounded like a train on the tracks that passes by Lake Accotink.

Engineers know they are not supposed to blast the horns at night going through the neighborhood like this.

However it was clearly more than just that, he had obviously slammed/yanked on that brake.

My base assumption is that a train had hit something that had forced it to stop, or at the very least nearly hit something that forced it to brake and blast its horns at midnight.

Yeah I heard it, no idea what it was. definitely wasn't a train, sounded like one of those old WWII bomb sirens stuck at the high note.

That definitely was a train slamming on the brakes.

Look for news of someone committing suicide in the coming days I guess.

No train I've ever heard, lived here my whole life and I've never once heard that noise.

The only tracks that are remotely close to me, have never been that loud. If it was on those tracks, and I could hear it, then everybody in the Forrester/Carleigh Pkwy. area is wide awake. It'll be in the news tomorrow if it was a train, but I'd be very surprised if it was.

I am certain it was a train because I could tell the noise was moving away, going eastbound.

I have also lived here for a very long time.

Trains run that track every night it seems, it has always been a busy route. As I stated before the engineers know they are not allowed to blow the horn past certain hours.

Now granted, I also have never heard or seen a train come to an emergency stop on the tracks in this area for all the time I have lived here.

However going by the most logical explanation as to what it could have been, there really is no other alternative.

A loud screeching noise along with a horn, that was moving. To me that solidifies train coming to an emergency stop.

Maybe it was the VRE, I didn't hear any screech before the horn, then again, the horn is what got my attention.

The source of that noise is currently sitting on the tarmac at DAA.

That's an interesting theory above. No lingering train delays this am, nothing on news. Before the odd loud screechy horn there was a crash. That's what woke me. Then this odd sound followed for about a minute. Sounded very close to us (in the vicinity of the tracks) and we live behind the Burke Road shopping center.

1. there is no midnight train
2. they 'blast' the horn whenever going over the bridge at Accotink. We live near there and you can hear it as early as 6am

Yep, we're in Forrester/Carrleigh and I bolted awake when I heard it. I heard a couple neighbors come out of their homes to check it out, so I know it woke the neighborhood. If that was a train...it must have been some type of special locomotive...not your run of the mill Amtrak or VRE. Strange.

I will give him the benefit of the doubt and say that perhaps that specific train shouldn't be in the area at that given time... maybe.

Norfolk Southern owns the rights to the line, it obviously has a contract with VRE and Amtrak. Amtrak uses it for one of its Crescent lines to Danville Va and further south.

I have no idea if NS leases the line to any other freight or passenger service, its possible. CSX Probably doesn't use it, if so perhaps not often.

So here is the deal: I called the West Springfield PD and they seemingly didn't know anything. If the train hit something important enough like a person or a car, it would be on the news in some capacity.

Some of you are saying you heard a crash, along with the loud horn type thing. I didn't hear the crash but I heard the screeching and the horn. If it was a train that hit something, large enough for it to hit its brakes but not important enough to report.. I don't know, seems odd. Maybe a big fuckin deer caught in its grill.

For those who don't think it was a train, please do offer a LOGICAL alternative then? It was no fucking air raid horn, it could not have possibly been a simple car accident that wakes up an entire area code. There certainly was no plane crash, or a plane flying at ground level.

Looked out my front window and the most logical explanation was staring right at me, simple answer there the whole time.

The area has been windy as hell lately, and many trees, even very BIG ones have been coming down.

My most basic explanation is this: A tree fell on the tracks, the train obviously did not see it in time to stop, it hit it. The tree did not immediately dislodge itself from the train after the train hit it, thus the train was forced to a screeching halt.

A train hitting a tree and not derailing is not newsworthy, and it must have been fixed relatively fast as there were no apparent delays in anything this morning.

That's my final appraisal of the situation, if you want to counter it with absurdly low flying aircraft, or air raid sirens, go ahead.

All I know is I've lived here for 21 years and never heard that noise at that time of night before.

You know what, I change my theory.

It was actually the ghosts of overdosed Westfield kids. I've been mocking them for years, they are closing in on my position, letting me know by terrorizing the neighborhood.
