It's 1 am. Someone quietly walks up from the banks of the Potomac River and shoots an 83-year-old man in the chest, nine times.

Then he disappears.

No motive. No clues.

Just a dead old man, assassinated. No one knows why.

Or they do, and are not telling.

I actually know the De Leede family pretty well and was very upset to hear about Johan's passing. He and his wife were probably married for about 50+ years and were some of the sweetest people i've ever met. It's sad to know that just a year or so ago I was learning how to water ski at his lake house with his family, I hope they find the person that committed this awful crime!

Why was that old man out there in the middle of the night?

It's a seriously devastating situation. He was shot while in his home. He was extremely active in bettering the community, taught neighbor and his grandkids how to sail and was overall an extremely well-liked, very fun and gentle soul. Family and friends are absolutely devastated and no one knows why anyone would ever harm him.

So how many murders in Fairfax County does this make now? Seems like we're reading about more and more than usual this early in.

To date, there have been three murders in Fairfax County in 2016:

Shaki E. Phillip was stabbed to death outside his Springfield home on by Dilshad Dosky on February 10.

Babtunde Fadahunsi was shot to death in his Falls Church apartment on February 23.

Johan De Leede was shot to death at his Lorton home on March 11.

We're on track for 12-15 homicides this year, which is nowhere near the worst it's been, but the track we're on does have an upward trend: there were 8 homicides in 2013, 10 homicides in 2014, and 11 homicides in 2015.

The murder of Johan De Leede is quite different than the previous two described in Springfield and Falls Church. He was an older retiree who lived in an expensive home in a nice area on Mason Neck. How many people do you think have even heard of Mason Neck before this murder? The place was pretty much zero crime.

Old Fairfax money is Mason Neck, Old man Lynch was the first Boss of Fairfax Co. He was the Donald Trump of his time around here.

Fairfax police may have a new clue in the mysterious shooting death of 83-year-old Johan De Leede at his riverfront home in Mason Neck.

Officers were called to the 6000 block of River Drive around 1:25 a.m. Sunday after receiving reports of possible gunshots, police said in a news release.

Patrol officers and police canines conducted an extensive search of the area but didn’t find anyone.

Major crimes detectives were called to the scene, and the search for evidence, witnesses and suspects continued Sunday.

The shots occurred in the same neighborhood where De Leede, a retired World Bank economist, was shot and fatally wounded on March 11. De Leede’s wife found him unresponsive around 1 a.m. that morning and thought he had fallen, police said.

“Preliminary investigation shows that the victim was inside the residence and was shot several times,” police said. But where those gunshots came from remains a mystery.

Last week, a police dive team searched for evidence in the Potomac River near De Leede’s home.

Officers “are and will be proactively checking the area and speaking to any resident who may have information,” the news release said. Police commanders also attended a local residents’ meeting last week to discuss the case and ask for anyone with information to come forward.

De Leede’s home sits on the Potomac River in an upscale and relatively secluded neighborhood at the end on Gunston Road, not far from Gunston Hall and Mason Neck State Park.

Appears the perpetrator potentially lives not too far from the scene of the crime with easy coming and going that is almost not detectable.

In reading the above report, could there be some whackadoodle who is target shooting or hunting in the remote area where de Leede lived?

Could deLeede have been puttering around in his garden or yard and been shot by a stray bullet? Maybe not murder but a terrible accident? Poor man could have been stunned and in shock and then wandered back into his house, collapsed and died.

I'm serious and not a weirdo, but could see something like this happening. Wrong place, wrong time?

I thought this might be the case, but FCPD's report states De Leede was shot multiple times. Once is an accident, several times implies deliberate intent.

Another weird thing is that it's reported De Leede was shot in his house, but his wife thought the noise was just him falling down the stairs. Now, if you've ever heard any kind of firearms discharge, you know they're loud and very distinctive.

While it's possible his wife has never heard a gunshot and so didn't know what one sounds like, I was hard pressed to think of a caliber (except for maybe a small one, like a .22 or .25) which wouldn't be immediately recognizable as a gunshot.

I've got a couple theories for this crime, but the one that makes the most sense is it was a targeted burglary by someone who thought De Leede wasn't home, or who got the wrong house. The fact that the burglar had a weapon points to an amateur and/or inexperience, because experienced, professional burglars usually don't bring guns to work.

So, a young punk with a punk's gun breaks into the wrong house, is surprised by the owner, panics and shoots him several times.

Of course, this narrative is flimsy and based on extremely sparse details, so it's probably wrong.

Most of the news outlets in this area don't do much reporting beyond rewriting whatever press release FCPD deigns to hand out.

That being said, there's nothing to report. De Leede's murder was in the cycle for about 48 hours, which was plenty of time to report all the meager facts.

Conspiracist bullshit about this being an assassination because of his work with the World Bank aside, there's no obvious motive for why an 83-year-old retiree was shot to death in his home, and all the subsequent reports have made it pretty clear that FCPD has no idea who killed Johan De Leede or why.

I'm pretty sure Officer Torres did it. He likes to murder people, and it's been a while.

Why doesn't he have an obituary? I searched The Washington Post & absolutely nothing came up?

Have some empathy. A person was murdered- in his own home-and there is a family that is grieving and is devastated. Lives were changed in an instant.

The police have nothing. This is a mystery. I hope that someone, somewhere will come forward with some information.

I'll believe the police are taking it seriously when they account for Officer Torres's whereabouts. He really likes murdering people, to the point where he'll do in front of police witnesses.
