Gas stations running out of fuel-panic shopping

The last snow storm was the second time I've noticed gas stations in the area all out of fuel. Despite what WTOP says, there's no need to fill up your car unless you actually need fuel. It looked like Gas Crisis 1970s style at Kings Park with people jockeying for position in line. WTF? Most of these folks will stay home from work anyhow until roads are passable. Should gasoline get officially added to the milk and TP panic buy list here now too?

Yes. The fuel trucks can't get in the fill up the stations.

There was this old man at the Costco gas station. He had his wife, 3 cats, and gallons and gallons of milk in their Subaru Outback.

The way I saw all of this was because he had the rear lift gate open, and was pumping gasoline into a blue plastic 55 gallon drum.

No telling how he got the drum out.

He was about 85ish years old, and he was white. Wearing a "USN Retired" ball cap.

Gas stations did not run out of gas. Tankers were rolling down Pickett Road long before most people could navigate out of their driveways or parking lots. The only reason to fill up before a storm is that you might lose power and can use the car (assuming you can get to it) for heat and as a cellphone-charging station.
