Nats trade Storen for Ben Revere

Some say it's a great deal, some say we should have gotten more. Some say Revere should start in CF over Taylor, some think it should be the other way around, Some think Revere can bat leadoff just like Span did, some see him as more of an 8-hole hitter. However it all works out, we got another left-handed bat with blazing speed who will be under team control for two years. And we get a PTBNL at some point as well.

There are enough pluses and minuses floating around that there's probably room to second guess both sides of the deal. Each team seems to have filled a hole, but you could argue as well that each one gave up too much to do it. Too soon to even speculate on the PTBNL, though it's not likely to be anyone with current significance. Overall, I think we just have to wait for Spring Training to see how all this will play out. At the end of the day though, it's hard to see how a guy with that much speed can be anything but a good thing to have on your side.

I like the deal. Storen is a FA after the season and has no future here...Nats also obviously didn't trust him as a closer (neither did I). Revere fills needs as he's an OF, bats LH, plays good D, and can hit leadoff even though he doesn't walk much. It's basically like getting Span from a few years ago. And he's under control for a couple of years.

Next up; trading Gio and releasing Papelbon.

That's pretty much the undeniable part of this, but guys with speed can often turn rapidly into guys who used to have speed. And Revere has kept his OPS in respectable territory (705 +/- 30) by having a high contact rate. Daniel Murphy has that as well, so if they hit 1-2 in the order, and then come Rendon and Harper, opposing pitchers and defenses will need to be sharp out of the gate. That's the up-side here. The down-side is that Revere loses a step at 28 and gets beaten by a few more fastballs. Then we might end up with just a fourth outfielder/bench-guy out of this deal. Keeping fingers crossed.

Revere is no Denard Span. He has a very weak arm and does not get great jumps. He compensates with excellent speed, but he is only an average CF defensively. With no power and almost no walks, you have a middling player.

Clipprad for Yunel Escobar worked out well under similar circumstances.

He was quite arguably more effective than either Soriano or Papelbon in that role, and among the top closers in the game. Storen gets dumped on for two post-season games when he shouldn't have been pitching to the guy who did the damage to begin with. That's on Davey Johnson and Matt williams. In 2012, Kozma should have been walked in a tie game to force the Cardinals to pinch-hit for Jason Motte. In 2014, Thornton should have pitched to Sandoval to force him to hit from the right-side, where he was hitting in the low .200s.

That's the hope -- that he can be a passable Span-like player. But Revere's defense is notoriously spotty despite his speed. His range, routes to the ball, and particularly his arm have long been areas of concern. But it's not so much that Revere is an incompetent fielder as that Span was quite a good one. Not a strong arm, but an accurate one, while his breaks and routes to the ball were about as good as anyone's. Revere at his best will be a step back from what we've been used to out there. I'd actually like to see Matt den Dekker given a shot at CF as well. We may have had better than Revere in-house all along.

They're the next two biggest salary pieces after Scherzer, Werth, and Zimmerman, but if we traded Gio, we'd have to pick up a pitcher somewhere. Wei-Yin Chen is out there and a lefty so he'd be a fit, but he'd also be a pretty expensive add. Might make some sense though, given that Strasburg will in all likelihood be headed west after this season, if not before or during. Plan-B would probably be giving a spot to Cole or Giolito, but I think I'd rather have them slotted in as backups behind Ross and Roark for at least the time being.

We're on the hook to Papelbon for $11 million no matter what, so just releasing him might not be the most attractive option we have. With Storen gone, he's the closer of the present, but his market value is obviously at a low-point. So maybe let his grievance be heard and decided, and then let him get back on a mound and try to build his stock back up a bit before getting serious about trying to trade him. We'd need time to find someone able and ready to do the ninth inning first anyway. Shawn Kelley or Felipe Rivero might be able to step in, and there are some other good young arms in the organization, e.g., Rafael Martin and Reynaldo Lopez. Most of them are or have only worked as starters, so it might be a stretch to anoint any of them as a closer at this point. It will all be something else to keep an eye on in February and March. Rizzo has been pretty good at charting the waters, so he may have more stuff hidden up his sleeve here.
