Best Place to Donate Used Clothes
Posted by: Franks ()

I have several trash bags full of clothes that are in really good shape but I just don't wear any more. Would like to donate them. What's the best organization to donate them to? Would like to find a place that, if they sell them, would actually use the money to help people and not to line the pockets of the folks who run the store. Suggestions? Thanks

How about a homeless shelter downtown? I think there's a big one around 3rd and G NW. There is another's around 13th and L NW as well. I think that's where you'd have a more direct impact of your giving.

I used to take bag of clothes over to Rose's Thrift Shop (I think that was the name) right down the street from Fairfax Square Apartments and in the same shopping center as the old Yen Cheng restaurant.

I was surprised by a few things. If the garment is not clean, it is immediately thrown in the recycling bin. It could be a $300 wool coat, but if it isn't clean it's gone. Period.

99.9% of out of season clothes are immediately thrown in the recycling bin. Really. They had a huge 18 wheeler trailer behind the place and the guy would chuck them right in there. Again, bring in a $300 wool coat in May, and it's going right in the recycle bin. Only donate clothes in the very first part of the season in which they are being worn. Otherwise they're gone.

If the garment isn't in excellent shape, in the recycle bin it goes. A beautiful warm coat that has a stain on the arm--it gets recycled. A very small stain might be acceptable, but anything larger than that and it's gone.

The thrift stores make no effort to keep the pants and jacket of a suit together. Really. I have seen Brooks Brothers suit jackets in there and the pants are over on another rack or just missing. If you have a suit to donate, safety pin the pants to the jacket and bring it in on a hanger.

Finally, think about giving the clothes directly to a person or family. If they're children's clothes, wash them and try to give them directly to a family. Doing so can help avoid them winding up in the trash heap.

Try the Fairfax Detox Center, or a local church here in Fairfax County. My last suggestion is for real, and PLEASE no snarky remarks - Contact the Lambe Center in Fairfax at the circle.

The parking lot behind the Mano's Pizza is a good place to drop off used clothes with people in them. It's near the Goodwill.

If you're reasonably close to Western Fairfax, please consider donating the clothing to ShareHouse. It's a completely free service run by volunteers that accepts gently-used clothing and shoes. Once a month, volunteers meet to set up tables, sort the clothing, and then anyone in need is allowed to come and take up to two bags of clothes/shoes for no charge. Most items are accepted and the bins are empty by the end of the day, but if for some reason there are leftover items, they are either saved for the next month (for example, if it's Summer clothing that's received in Wintertime, it's not likely to be taken during Winter months, so it's kept in their storage until Summer and then put back out), or donated to another thrift shop. Here's info about where their drop box is located: http://www.pleasantvalleyumc.net/sharehouse/

Meade needs a constant source of clothes so he can remain the fashion icon that he is.
