' "vitriol" means "something felt to resemble vitriol ' Let's look at that shall we? 'Thing A means 'something felt to resemble Thing A'? You are the undisputed king stud of definitions. Vitriol is sulphuric acid which was famously thrown in one character's face in Graham Greene's novel Brighton Rock, and is part of the saying "blue ruin and vitriol" 'blue ruin' being Bombay Sapphire gin.
