Does Safeway have a deal with FCPS to hire special ed students?

Yes, and many other businesses as well.

I worked at the Pentagon for years and watched as the custodial staff of GS employees was slowly replaced by contractors who used mentally and physically challenged (special ed) folks to clean the place.

Corporate America is always happy to exploit the weak and feeble-minded. It's the American way!

I like special ED kids but last week I couldn't get out of the Giant parking lot in Franklin Farms. This bag guy wanted to continue an hour long conversation with me. I finally rolled up my windows and just started backing away.

I also saw this other bag guy a couple of months ago signing at the top of his lungs in the parking lot.

What did he want to sign? Or was he deaf? I don't get what the issue is here. Fact of the matter is that if they didn't work, they'd be on SSI and Medicaid. That would cost more money to the public. Companies that incorporate people into their business model are willing to balance the potential loss of benefits with the tax cuts they receive. Furthermore, there are other jobs out there for people without disabilities...do you really want to bag groceries or return carts? I see no problem here, it's actually an everybody wins scenario....except when they let them run the registers at 25% speed when there are no other lanes open which is absolutely ridiculous Burke/old Keene mill Safeway.

OMG the things people say on this site. It's great having them work and exist outside of what happened years ago when they were locked away. This gives them an opportunity to learn and grow more independent. BUT, I MUST AGREE that the burke safeway must do more to OPEN LINES and have more check out people. Don't go there because it is frustrating as hell.
