American National Catholic Church in Fairfax – a non-Roman Catholic Catholic Church

From the website http://www.mysaintanthonys.org :

“St. Anthony of Padua American National Catholic Church is a dynamic faith community that seeks to be a beacon of hope and source of strength for those who don’t feel connected to or welcomed by the institution of the Roman Catholic Church.”

and

“The parish of Saint Anthony of Padua is an all-embracing church community of the American National Catholic Church http://americannationalcatholicchurch.org ). The parish of St. Anthony of Padua is a faith community in the Catholic tradition which embraces all into full participation in the sacramental life of the church.”

I’m not trying to start a religious debate. If you are Roman Catholic and happy with your church, great. But I’ve run into a lot of people over the years who were raised Catholic and no longer feel welcome in the church due to divorce, sexual orientation, etc., and might be interested to know a place like this exists.

I’m an agnostic who attended with a friend, and even I couldn’t find anything in the message to complain about – love and peace and hope, and everyone is included.

They also live-stream the mass.

He is a scientist, not that right-wing loonies can't come up with entirely predictable ways of dismissing that reality.

Thanks for attending our little but growing church. My family and I have been attending for a few years and found it very accepting and welcoming without a lot of pretense and expectations.

I hope you'll come back to visit.

more prevailant in protestant churches is "product confusion" name theft.

a con man will use the name of the church but the property will be suspicious and the money will never be registered with the heirarchy of the given church

then what they do - is skip out of the lease with the donations - or sell the property without the church's permission and skip town

-----------------------
ALLOT more common than you think - and a lot of fuckign foreigners have been doing that in the area - but also attackign (robbing) the churches lately

^^ democrats

I've been back a few times and will either go tomorrow or watch the mass online. I wanted to add that spiritual people who aren't big fans of organized religion might want to consider this church (if they are thinking about a church).

The priest gave a really good homily the other week about distinguishing the rules of scripture from man-made religious rules that don't come from scripture and not following rules that have no basis in scripture. For example, I didn't know roman catholic weddings had to be held in a church. Since that rule isn't in scripture, the ANCC will do outdoor weddings. That may be kind of a trivial issue, but it's seemingly man-made rules that have turned me off to religion in the past, and it's one more thing I like about this church.

I'm posting this because I bet there are a lot of people in Fairfax who have the same complaints about religion that I do and who might be interested in a church like this one. Since this is FFU, I'll add: if you like your church, great - keep going. But if you have no church, keep this one in mind if you ever want one.

You need to distinguish Roman Catholic from Catholic or catholic. Roman Catholics follow the pope, whereas other churches that are part of the catholic faith may or may not follow the pope.

For example the Maronite Catholic church follows the pope whereas churches of the Anglican Communion are outside papal authority as are Eastern Orthodox churches. The Eastern Orthodox Church and the churches of the Anglican Communion are part of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. Maronite, Anglican, and Orthodox priests are not required to be celibate and can marry.

The current primate, or Presiding Bishop, of the Episcopal Church holds a B.S. in biology from Stanford, a M.S., and a Ph.D. in oceanography. In addition she earned a masters degree in divinity. She is also an instrument-rated private pilot and speaks fluent Spanish.
