Outback Steakhouse in Fairfax closed

Another business on Fairfax blvd has kicked the bucket. Anyone know why they closed down? The place was packed every night.

Packed with idiots with the money to pay for the garbage they served up. Almost as bad as Red Lobster, and the Bone Fish Grill.

They closed because the store wasn't profitable. They'd been carrying it for several years, but a turnaround never came. Has nothing to do with Outback product, but lots to do with the changing local retail landscape.

We rarely eat out anymore, most restaurants get their food from Sysco. It's all premade and frozen, Red Lobster was sold by Darden Foods to another company. We went to Olive Garden once, that was bad enough. I wanted an ingredient left out of a dish I ordered, the server told me they couldn't do that because the food comes frozen in a bag. She stated all they do is pop it in a microwave and pour it on the noodles, that did it for us eating there again.

Condolences. The area has many wonderful eateries that you are simply missing out on.

No, it's not. SYSCO is easily the largest food distriobutor in the country, and while they dos distribute frozen food items, they also ditribute meats, dairy, seafood, and produce that are fresher than what you could go get yourself. Their Amazon-like genius is in their distribution system. They can and do move the best and freshest product available anywhere through that system.

> Red Lobster was sold by Darden Foods to another company.

That would be Golden Gate Capital -- a spin-off of Bain Capital and the same people who own Anne Taylor, J Jill, California Pizza Kitchens, Eddie Bauer, Romano's Macaroni Grill, Pacific Sunwear, and various other well-known brands.

Hmmm. Do you use a microwvae at home where you apparently take a lot of your meals these days?

Good. I've only been in there once on a Friday night. The missus and I were told it would be a twenty minute wait, we said fine and hung out in the lobby for two minutes. The smell was unbearable. This was five years ago and I can remember it like it was yesterday. It STANK like old grease, vomit, and beer. We gave them back their vibrating saucer thing and walked out.

Outback's quality has really deteriorated in recent years, but people keep comin'

It helps them that most people can't cook a good steak on a home grill.

Outback's Steaks were not good, tuff, chewy, never cooked correctly & much un eatable . I returned the steaks often and ordered salmon (like 3 times, different visits Ffx Blvd). Very few restaurants are worth the $60.00-$80.00 spent for dinner for 2, with ONE adult bev., no app's!) Twinbrook's Outback was open last Thursday eve-I noticed driving by.

I would rather buy a steak and cook it myself. Outback Is almost the same price of mortons for a steak that is not aged.

That little area is is going down. Gas station closed and now steakhouse. I'm thinking these areas will be office medical places, boring.

The Chains all suck. Manufactured friendliness and crap food. Crap service.

If you are in Fairfax City - why would you sit and eat in a gross cookie cutter restaurant?

Along that strip, Captain Pell's and Skidoos is 100% better and a far better atmosphere.

Go local. Boycott chains.

I know someone who worked at that outback, they told me that Fairfax Hooters is planning on relocating to the Outback lot, though I don't know if they would reuse the building or knock it down and build new.

I always am astonished when I see people in line to go in an Outback. The food is universally horrible at that place. Also way overpriced. I guess their TV marketing campaign works in getting the sheeple to come in.

I guess people are just lazy. I can make steaks (dry aged) on my grill for less than half the price of a dinner for 2 at Outback. Amish butter glaze is the secret.

What really did it for me with Outback was one time, near closing, I had to order a particular steak cooked medium well because they were "out of the ones cooked medium."

Might be right - heard they want to level the shopping center where Hooters is and put in an office building.

The steaks at the 'cheap' steak chains are full of salt, they soak them in some kind of brine to make them taste good. People like salt and its in everything except a fresh home cooked dinner with no processed foods FRESH meat, fish or poultry, veggies, fruits, grains, and pasta is not too salty.

Lots of Salt intake gives you high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes , water retention.

Exercise walk, bike or swim
Lose weight
Stop smoking
less salt
less fatty foods
less processed foods
Less snack food
FRESH Meats, veggies fruits
Grains and Pasta Yea!

You'll be good to go for a long time

LOL! The best and most exclusive restaurants use lots and lots of salt. Salt and butter are the two magic ingredients in creating and cooking a tasty upscale meal. Some would add a third in lemon juice, but nobody bypasses salt and butter.

Brining of course draws moisture and flavor into foods which also tenderizes them.

> Lots of Salt intake gives you high blood pressure,

Water retention, yes. Kind of like brining yourself. These other claims however are old wives' tales.

I can remember back in the late 1980s, that location used to be a Po' Folks restaurant. It was a sit down dining establishment that served a lot of friend foods for a low cost. I'm sure in today's politically correct world, Po' Folks would have been labeled "racist".

As someone posted above, Hooters is relocating to the former Outback location. The current Hooters (and the section on the other side of the strip mall that houses Baskin Robbins) has to be torn down for the road improvements planned there.

At the time, it was labeled a Dogpatch concept that served second-rate food even for a cheap place. Drinks in a Mason jar? Please! Black-eyed Pea did a much better job.

I avoid Fairfax City restaurants due to the sky-high food taxes.

No, they weren't at all. As it happens, the two chains were each founded in 1975, but Po' Folks came out of South Carolina, while Black-Eyed Pea was born in Dallas. Po' Folks went bankrupt on 1988, but a few outlets named that are still operated in the Florida panhandle (what a shock) by a Wendy's subsidiary. Black-Eyed Pea once had about 130 outlets, but the holding company that owned them went bankrupt in 2001, with more than half the locations going down. The pieces were picked up by two smaller scale operators, one of which runs BEP stores in the DFW and Houston areas, with the other running stores in the Denver area.

What is the problem with the Outback in Twinbrook Plaza off Braddock? The service is slipping and the kitchen messes up orders. Needed a quick meal and it was on the way so we stopped. My roasted beef dinner was delivered without the sauce, which is the what was supposed to make it a special dish. Ditto for my wife's chicken, no Marsala sauce on the chicken Marsala. Large group of wait staff were sitting out in the dining room eating their dinner between checking on the patrons. Very weird.

Well, there was a notable difference in food quality, starting with the fact that one served Country-fried Steak and Desserts, while the other served Kuntry-Fried Steak and Dee-lishus Dee-serts. In other words, one was a restaurant and the other was a cartoon-land caricature of a restaurant.
