Fairfax Co., Geer family reach settlement
Posted by: Board of Supervisors ()
Date: April 21, 2015 01:40PM

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors reached a settlement with the family of John Geer for $2.95 million after Geer died as a result of a shooting involving a Fairfax County police officer in 2013.

That's more than the cost of four new synthetic turf fields.

When I'm ready, that's how I'm going out. Nice nest egg for my family.

Apparently someone else thought of that too

Wrong. He/She is making more than that. With the length of this case and the fact they had to file suit which is hundreds of hours of work, I'd say closer to 50%.

33% is the standard personal injury contingency fee for a slam dunk no work involved case.

I don't care how much the lawyer made: the Geers would not have won a single cent without the lawyer.

After a Fairfax-paid cop kills a man, and after the prosecutor stonewalls, and after the County stonewalls, and after the federal government stonewalls, finally a LAWYER got results.

As a Fairfax County resident and TAXPAYER (unlike a lot of Democrats, who are government-leeches), I am outraged at the police, not the attorney who got this great result.

Only a misanthrope would bring up how much the lawyer made. Of course, Fairfax Underground is full of misanthropes.

Is that our tax money, or does it come from insurance?

In the case where the Fairfax County employees murdered a peaceful optometrist who liked to bet a few dollars on football games, the County had to pay a portion, a taxpayer-funded insurance company paid some portion, and some kind of Virginia-taxpayer-funded-fund paid the rest.

As a student of marginal analysis, this means that 100% was paid by taxpayers.

By the way, it was Detective Baucom who caused the optometrist to be murdered.

You know today (April 21), hundreds of Fairfax County and State employees showed up for the memorial service of a girl who was murdered, and I bet not a single one of these employees had to use any "annual leave".

I wonder how many of these Fairfax County and State Employees showed up at Culosi's memorial service.

Can the family still go after the cop or county in federal court?

Seriously, you can all suck my balls...

I'll laugh when your home values plummet when this place devolves into PG county.

$2.95M, less 50% for the lawyer, leaves roughly $1.5M. Uncle Same is going to take 40% as income tax based on classification (same as bonus), subtract another 600k and you now have 900k remaining.

So, by my estimate, the family will walk with roughly 900k. Not much considering the suit was $2.95M.

According to the Washington Post article, the cop can still be prosecuted in a criminal court. However, I don't think it is 'the family going after him' criminally.

The settlement was a civil matter.

Trial.. Bring it on Mother Fairfax. Manslaughter that's what it was. Deal with it.

The IRS doesn't tax compensatory damages paid for wrongful death. The settlement will be tax free.

I would guess none since he was committing a felony.

900K is more than zero. It is for the two girls and should pay for their college. Nothing can compensate for a lost father.

His wife didnt think he was all that.

And they will get more than $900K. IRS does not get anything out of an injury/death settlement. It's not income.

I'm pretty sure it'll be 33% for the attorneys. I don't know for a fact. Forty percent is usually reserved for when the case actually goes to trial.

I bet the family will receive about $1.5-2.0 million, tax-free. It's still not worth a human life.

I think Geer had a huge role in his own death that day. He wasn't innocent, he was acting irresponsible. He had children, he was in a community. The police were told he had guns and he was out of control. The ex was scared of him. The police were on edge because they knew he had guns. WTF, SWAT surrounding you, telling you they know you have guns and are concerned. What happened was a bad situation took a very bad turn. I am sorry for the family, but they have to know John Geer played a HUGE role in what happened that day.
