How come Foxes don't eat cats anymore in FF County?
Posted by: Not so Wild Kingdom ()

My neighbors outdoor cats are small and the foxes here are huge. I see them all the time and they coexist in the same area in sight of each other. When I was growing up here the foxes ate all the feral and outdoor cats in their territory but they seem to have lost the instinct.

Because squirrels and little dogs are easier prey, and there are certainly enough of them around to keep the foxes fed. Cats can be mean.

Coyotes are much more likely to take cats than foxes. Squirrels are about as big a thing as most foxes want to tackle, with rats, mice, moles, recently minted bunnies, and even unwary birds also on the menu.

On that same note, why are there so many rabbits? They're getting hugely fat. Where are their predators?

We used to have bunnies but I haven't seen any in a long time. We had 13 deer in our yard about a week ago though.

I've watched one of my cats playing with the local fox several times. They'll chase each other back and forth and the fox acts like a pet dog rolling around and getting down low on it's front paws and hopping side to side trying to get him to play. They'll do that for a while and then just kinda hang out together. They don't get real close but they'll come within probably about 10 feet of each other. Neither one seems particularly concerned. The cat's huge though. And fearless. Definitely would not be a good choice to mess with. lol

Tone of foxes in my neighborhood and they all seem to run from my Boston terrier. I was worried at first, but they don't seem too mean at all.

Not unless they're hungry. Foxes are smart enough to know not to risk an
unnecessary injury. That's why they prefer the smaller dogs. Chihuahuas,
Dachshunds, and puppies beware. There are also plenty of rats around
dumpsters that give them a food source. They might not seem "mean" but
beware of rabies. They also carry distemper and mange. I saw one in
Cobbdale that was totally ate up with mange and looked terrible.

To the OP. The foxes around here are no bigger than anywhere else.

The bunnies probably stay underground in freezing weather. Don't they hybernate like bears? I really don't know. I always think of them as showing up in the spring like Robins; but then, I've been seeing Robins as well as Canadian Geese all winter. What's up with that? And DON't tell me GLOBAL WARMING. I have a hard time believing that.

The geese simply over-winter here and have for many years now. A few robins do as well, but not at all in numbers like the geese.

How are you coming along with gravity?

Cottontail rabbits don't hibernate but they do find a place to hide during
really cold weather and only come out when they're hungry. They're also
mostly nocturnal. I haven't noticed any robins yet but as for the geese,
a lot of them figured out there was plenty of food for them around here
so they simply don't migrate like they used to. I wish they'd go back
to their old ways. Rabbits and geese are also fox and coyote food.
Not sure about foxes but if a coyote finds goose eggs they'll eat them all.

I grew up here very near Scott's Run and the foxes are definitely larger than they used to be (60s/70s). Some of them are near medium dog size. Maybe they are interbreeding.

This is true. I've seen gray foxes play with cats, though they do like eating kittens.

I can't think of any biological reason why they should be larger now but
as far as inbreeding, coyotes and foxes cannot. However, coyotes can interbreed with domestic dogs.

I've seen one of our neighbor cats stand off to a fox and chase it. They seem skittish.

No Recipies

We have a few dens that are near the Water Shed.
Fox and kit come through the back yard all the time. Purina sends us bags of Fox dirks. That is Dirk as in small bit;dry chunk.

The fox chews this dry fox food, just like my dog eats his kibble.

We are thinking of buying Denta sticks so that the Fox can keeps his teeth free from tatrter!

I saw a couple of foxes at the local lesbian bar and I am quite sure that they will eat any pussy that comes their way.

All the foxes I've seen in this area were small, They aren't going to take on an outdoor cat. Coyotes on the other hand will kill cats and small dogs.

Might be a good idea since, according to the recent lawsuit, kibbles kills.

Not that there’s anything wrong with foxes.

Well, I guess that just had to be said. I’m surprised it took so long.

My cats play with the foxes. My stupid ass little shih-tsu chases foxes to the end of the yard (she comes back acting all triumphant).

Foxes are smart and don't want trouble.

I'm no biologist, but I read on the Interwebs (so it must be true!) that the increase in rabbits is due to bird flu knocking down the crow population--that baby rabbits are mostly kept in check by crows.

No idea of the veracity of this assertion.

The last couple of FF cats I had were rather bland. FF squirrel is more taster.
