That will be tough. They only have three, one is on the Great Lakes and the other two are based in Seattle.

USCG cutters can do the job of breaking the ice on the Potomac.

And one of the two in Seattle isn't even operational. We need four new "Polar" class ships yesterday. And with climate change another six in ten years. I would like to see a Congressman Schoeneman in the near future and I'm not even a Republican. Good Luck

While we're at it, the Navy needs to send a cruiser to rocket Woodbridge.

Why stop there? The entire Rt. 1 corridor from the Beltway to the Rappahannock is ripe for rockets!

Nope, there is one on the Chesapeake Bay that keeps open the shipping channel to Baltimore.

They just used a couple of days because Tangier Island was iced in.

"The Coast Guard icebreaking boat assigned to the area broke down earlier in the week and Tangier Mayor James Eskridge called on Maryland for help.

The problem was that Maryland state ships aren’t supposed to be in Virginia’s waters; they need a formal request from Tangier, which arrived Thursday morning. After clearing the red tape, John Gallagher, director of Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources’ hydrographic operations, says the largest DNR icebreaker ship was redirected.

The 100-foot vessel, J. Millard Tawes, was diverted from its duties keeping the shipping channel clear between Crisfield and Smith Island to attack the glacier that has enveloped Tangier, a Chesapeake Bay island 12 miles from the mainland."

Maybe Chris Christie and Hillary could jump up and down on the Potomac.

So, Tangier Island is Maryland’s and the Chesapeake Bay in which it sits is Virginia’s?

Wrong...

What is being used on the Chesapeake is a USCG Cutter, not one of their icebreakers. Also, the article references Maryland DNR boats, which are also not really icebreakers.

Heck, the Spirit of the Potomac party boat could break the ice on the Potomac.

Was just looking at this yesterday. Saw someone saying the Canadians had just broken a laker free on Lake Erie. The new Mac isn't nearly as heavy a breaker as the old Mac - she's an in-betweener - designed for broader use scenarios, but for thinner ice than the Winds-based Mac.

On the general topic, we need new ones, but new design, not a Polar redo. The Polars are way too finicky/complex.

Problem is replacements sufficient for year-round polar activity will be 700M or so a piece and there aren't off-the-shelf designs for year round (unless you buy Russian...) so it'd be 7 years or so at the earliest to get the first one into the water. Result, you have to spend 60M or so on the one that's tied up in Seattle just to keep a minimal capability.

Alternative might be buy a smaller number with off-the-shelf designs at lower capability from the Finns that would support presence/breaking most of the year while we get a year round capability designed/built.

Yes its been an ice cold February I Understand that But? Why did not the Gov of Va make the formal request to the Free State of Maryland? Instead of the Mayor of Tangier? Is our Terry still in Africa? Or is he in Jail?

The Capstan used to be based at Fort Belvoir

The Coast Guard used to base the USCGC Capstan (WYTL 65601) at Fort Belvoir but it is now based in Philly. The Capstan is capable of breaking 18 in (0.46 m) of ice with propulsion ahead and 21 in (0.53 m) of ice backing and ramming. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USCG_65%27_Small_harbor_tug .

I guess it was needed elsewhere.

Good to know - my guys usually deal with the heavy/moderate breakers and we're constantly trying to get some new ones.

Back in the 70's, Capstan docked at Alexandria, near the Wilson Bridge. She might have been there earlier as well. She was built in 1961.
