The Washington Nationals have signed Stephen Strasburg to a one-year deal worth $7.4 million, avoiding arbitration.

Kind of a foregone conclusion. Only the dollar amount was in question. This is Strasburg's next-to-last trip through arbitration though, so unless the Nats can sign him to an extension, he'll be a free agent after the 2016 season.

Teehee. Gotta love that Nats optimism!!! I'm looking forward to another spectacular regular season this year.

162 games is a long haul, and that's all you can actually build for. The playoffs are a pure crap-shoot. All you can do is build and work to get there, and then just hope for the best. It's not like KC and SF were even close to being the best teams in their leagues last year, but there you have it. Get in and hope the chips decide to fall your way.

In 2012, Strasburg was shut down when he reached his innings limit while coming back from Tommy John surgery. This is an established best practice. In 2014, the division series lasted four games. A starter only pitches once in a four game series. Bumgarner pitched once. He lost.

With home field advantage still left to play for they decided that they no longer wanted him pitching. Prior to his collapse it was assumed that they'd give him two extra starts to get him on the mound for game one. He was so bad that Johnson thought that Djax gave them a better chance to win.

Made up nonsense. The innings limit had been announced in the Spring. With the Nats in actual contention for the first time, there was debate from some corners calling for the Nats to let him keep pitching. Scott Boras was making noise about the potential legal ramifications of ignoring established best medical practices. No decisions were made by Davey Johnson in the matter. The GM, ownership, counsel, and the medical staff made the call, and it never changed from what it had been in March.

Everyone does, moron. The Braves were the best team of the 1990's. They eventually won 14 consecutive division titles. One World Series. The post-season is a crap-shoot. The regular season is what tells you who the best teams are. Been that way since forever.

Never should have been down to Storen at all. Davey Johnson made bad decisions in Game-5. He left Gio Gonzalez in too long for the in-season reason of getting him qualified for the win. He needlessly tabbed Edwin Jackson for an inning of relief, when he'd been beat up in Game-3 and his woes as a starter all year began with first-inning runs. Davey deserved his Manager of the Year award alright, but he botched that final game in grand style.

The Strasburgers meanwhile fancy that had he not been shut down, he would have pitched Game-3 instead of Edwin Jackson, and would of course have won handily, thereby altering the course of history. Has anyone ever explained, by the way, why Davey Johnson brought Storen in to pitch the 9th of that game with the Nats down 8-0?
