and maybe the debt problem is a complex issue that austerity alone cant solve. taxes might have to go up.

but if we raise taxes on the wrong people, we could damage the economy. if we tax those in the lower tax brackets, it might lower demand for goods and that would not turn out good for our economy. maybe taxing the very wealthy is the most rational solution

When the rich are getting richer, middle and lower class wages are stagnating or dropping, then its time to nudge up the tax for the wealthy. Its not going to hurt job creation or the economy unless the wealthy decide to put a halt to job production just out of stubbornness.
