Intersection of Lee and Gallows
Posted by: Sproutcity ()

Any word on what will be built on the two corners at the intersection of Lee and Gallows in Merrifield? I noticed a big fenced in grass patch on one side and on the other corner a gigantic great big eyesore.

I think it's time to at least put the Taco Bell's back where it was on that corner along with Dad's Burgers and Z-Pizza. They don't have to bring back the Pizza Hut on my account.

Gerry Conman too it all away about 10 years ago.

I miss Upscale Resale in Merrifield. It's been replaced by some Greveys wannabes, likely overpriced restaurants with limited parking. Geesh.

Im not super pissed that those places are gone but I have to say that i am a bit confused as to why they had to be torn down. They said it was because they had to widen the roads but even after they did that it still seemed like there was space for those business to remain open. Particularly the shopping center that housed the Z-pizza and Carvel....that shit was brand spanking new...couldn't have been more than a year or so old.

My understanding is Lee and Gallows is supposed to end up like the fly over like at Gallows and 50.

So no more light.

The stupid intersection is like 10 lanes wide in one direction at this point anyway.

If you were running a business that had 20 parking spaces in a good location, and the state came along and said we are going to take the land that 10 of those spaces are located on, plus we are going to disrupt traffic for two years, would you want to stay?

Good point, Bill. N. I don't fault the businesses for leaving. And I hope they were paid off handsomely. I just think it is a shame for so much disruption with the pay-off pretty lame. And that corner still looks like a dump.

I doubt any store got paid. Unless their lease was terminated. The land owners definitely got a payday for lost revenue and land

Way to keep up. Open Road Grill & Icehouse, Merrifield Wine & Beer, and Trio Grill are all owned by Metropolitan Hospitality Group, the same people who run Circa in Clarendon, Dupont Circle, and Foggy Bottom. Grevey's is owned by Kevin and Sandy Grevey.

Thank you for the info....I didn't know that. Continuing then. So, what's your point? They put in places that wannabe like or as good as class Greveys. They fall short IMHO. But the young people don't care. They have something shiny and new. And expensive!

Ah, Dupont Circle. Such a delightful place. That means it's really super duper cool good...right?

I use to live behind the horse owner on Gallows. You don't need to know exactly where. I was happy. Then they tore into the place and ruined Merrifield. I couldn't take it any longer...the increased traffic, utilities constantly being messed with, etc. I moved and took a small loss. But a loss, nevertheless. I am still bitter and miss the old, but I am happy living not far from the Outer Banks outside the "tourist zone'.

If it was a 10 before, Merrfield went to 1 and now it's back to a 4. There's still room for improvement, but I'm not counting on it.

The "Merrifield Suburban Center" comprises the 13 sectors mapped below. Each sector is divided into sub-sectors. The NW corner of Lee Highway and Gallows Road is Subsector C-5. It is planned for a mix of retail, industrial, and warehouse uses. Free-standing and drive-through retail are prohibited. Access to and from Gallows Road and Lee Highway must be strictly minimized. There is a 95-foot building height limit, but a 20-foot bonus can be earned by providing two stores of underground parking.

The idea here is for the parcel to be high and high-density. It is to be focused inwardly on the developing area between Lee Highway and the Metro station, not outwardly on Lee/Gallows and beyond. If you want tacky strip malls meanwhile, you'll just have to go over to Falls Church.

Road House has been fine all along, but the beer-and-wine place is in its third incarnation already, and Trio can't decide whether to be a piano bar or shoot for fine dining. As the result, they miss both marks. My team and I have given them our advice, but they haven't taken it yet.

The whole area was in need of reinvention. Merrfield is not some country crossroads anymore. Many of the people whose needs are being addressed in current plans are indeed very young -- as in not even born yet.

Take it or leave it as you will. There is still a Circa location there.

I lived near Nags Head in the early 1950's. Across the street from a driftwood and chicken-wire fruit and produce stand. That was "downtown" for us. The rest was sand and scrub and gulls and unspoiled beaches for miles and miles. They've ruined that place. The fact that there is now a place that can be called "OBX" just underscores the fact.

The planned use for Subsector B-5 is as a garden center. Which is to say that the Merrifield people can pretty much stay there as long as they like. There are restrictions on changes they can make to the property and on any development that the present or any future owner might want to undertake one day.

Thank you, Info Man. Also, years ago it was my understanding that they would be putting in an art building very much like the Torpedo Factory in Old Town. Is that still going to happen in Merrifield? Also, there's a big grass patch in front of the Arby's when last I visited. is that going to be anything?

I am reading this to mean that you are pissed that you did not own the land or have the foresight to acquire the land.

No mean intent here, I have failed to do the same in Fairfax County as land values have gone through the roof.

There has indeed been a long-term plan to build an interchange between Lee Highway and Gallows Road. It won't be as elaborate as the single-point urban interchange built 30 years ago at Gallows and Route 50.

Question is whether the funding will ever exist to do it.
