I can remember when 95 was tolled in Richmond, I honestly have no issues with some of the Tolls, CBBT, CBB, Maryland has it right on 301 by charging to come back to VA. There is a toll on a bridge going 17 north. I really think its a stretch and a shame to build a toll ie HOT lanes on the beltway, but the road needed an upgrade, 66 is probably next. But I have a sore spot with HOV, and feel we pay enough in taxes we shouldn't get charged even more, We pay taxes and have to pay Ambulance Transport. I can only imagine how much further they are going to dig into our pockets. My wife pays $35.00 a week to use the hot lanes and I don't agree with that charge, but if it makes her feel better, I am sure she wont mind my paying for a weekly subscription to the porn site of my choice. I always have the option of 2 wheels and no TOLL's. ;)

Because it gives politicians a way to get the infrastructure they want while not having to rely solely on tax revenues from the general fund to pay for it.

One way to pay for a road is to sell revenue bonds, which are then repaid with tolls gathered from drivers who use that road. (A variation on this scheme was the Fairfax County Parkway, which was financed with revenue bonds which were repaid from the county's general fund.)

Another way is to give the franchise to build the road to a private company and charge tolls for its use, which is the model used for the Dulles Greenway and the I-95 HOT lanes.

Ultimately, roads have to be paid for somehow. Increasing taxes is unpopular and therefore dangerous to a politician who wants to keep his job, so they come up with toll road schemes instead.

If you don't want to pay tolls, don't use tolled roads.

Why does Virginia love toll roads? Because the GOP is a bunch of gutless bitches who only fund their own bank accounts.

Because after handing out all the tax revenue to lazy nigs in order to buy their votes, Libs leave no money for infrastructure.

Because we dont fund our roads. our gas tax is at 1990 levels. We rent our roads out to other nations so they can build on them and siphon our cash off to distant shores. We lack the resolve to pay for what we use. Instead we pay more, to others to do our work for a profit.

Government is bad, taxes are bad giving our land and money away to other countries is good. Get with the program

The EZpass lanes near Braddock have made driving there very dangerous. Everyone rides the lanes till they get to the toll cameras and merge back. And who the fuck designed that exit to Braddock? People exiting and entrring the highway use the same road?

The Virginia General Assembly - your House of Delegates member and Virginia State Senators - have refused to properly fund roads. State VDOT has responsibility for 90% of all roads in Northern Virginia (Arlington County owns their own roads, as do cities and towns).

The other factor is short-minded elected officials who think that funding of initiatives like bus rapid transit and bike trails and pedestrian walkways and new zoning where you can live/work/play without as many car trips (Tysons vision) -- that those things will result in a major reduction in traffic.

VDOT needs two primary budgets - (1) repair/maintain the existing roads, and (2) funds to build new roads. Both of those budgets have been repeatedly funded ridiculously low and the GA has appropriated funds for other causes and priorities. Until the past two decades the gas tax used to adequately fund our transportation needs, but it is too low to do that now.

So the answer to the question is that without toll roads and without public/private partnerships (where the initial up front construction costs are paid by private capital - not state & federal taxes) there would be basically no new road construction to relieve traffic congestion.

So you have a choice -- don't pay tolls and stay in the slower more congested traffic lanes, or pay the tolls and enjoy a higher speed trip with high chance of no traffic jams.

Conservative state. Tends to believe in freedom of companies to make money and that the private sector does things better.

Is that wise? I'm not a fan of how far it's gone.

Because the Old Dominion is a business-first, privatize everything for capitalists state. Look how Fairfax County was overrun and controlled by real estate developers for years.

We don't own our toll roads. We source them out to private companies and guarantee them profits.

Australian businesses have to make money somehow. And conservatards would sell the state capital if it meant more money for capitalists.

It's kind of hard to sell the entire city of Richmond. There's a good deal of private property, colleges, etc.

Tolls are probably a more capitalistic way of paying for roads than the income tax. You pay for usage. Not very convenient however... And as a native Virginian I've always thought them daggummed Yankees had all the toll roads and VA didn't have many at all.

The states with the most toll roads are in the Northeast - in states traditionally run (into the ground) by liberals. As Virginia becomes overrun with libs escaping the mess and unemployment they've created at home, expect Virginia to sink as well.

So I guess Liberals and Libertarians have more in common than they think...well aside from being completely stupid.
