Why isn't there a "Cook-Out" in Northern VA?

Everytime I go to SoVA they have them all over the place. How come they don't have those places here?

The closest one I know about is in Charlottesville.

Food is OK, not sure it is great, but it may depend on the store and how busy they are. A lot of food for the money, good shake options.

If you want shake options that are close, check out ZBurger mainly in DC.

I love Cookout! Just came from a trip through Richmond tonight, and enjoyed the fast yummy junk food there! I've been to a bunch of their locations and love 'em. Plus they're open super late!

Cheerwine ice cream float tops it off for me....

Place rocks! Great food and prices, their BBQ is better than just about anything else in this area.
They seem to only open them in college towns, don't think Mason would cut it. Not sure if it's for the easy to get employees or cheap food for students?
Wish they would open one here too, I think there's one in Fredericksburg too?

Why isn't there a Cook Out in NOVA? The same reason there isn't a Sonic, Hardees, Zaxbys, Krystal/White Castle, Steak 'n Shake, Jack in the Box, Whataburger, or Bojangles, etc... Massive inhibitors like high property costs, taxes, and generally anti-business behavior perpetuated by municipalities that kill business growth with excessive studies, permits, fees, and restrictions. The most profitable retailer in the world - Walmart - had no store in the district until 2013. By that measure, you won't see a Cook Out north of Fredericksburg until 2050.

Does that (what you said) mean zoning laws?

They're waiting until FFX Co. passes a meals tax. Then they'll jump right in. Likely the first location in Vienna, next to a mattress store.

None of which, oddly enough, impacts the proliferation of McDonald's, Subways, Chipotles, Starbucks, etc. throughout Northern Virginia.

A quick check of Sonic's store locator for a 100 mile radius around Fairfax County shows two in Fredericksburg, and seven in the over taxed, over regulated, permit happy People's Republic of Maryland. So much for your politicized "explanation".

These fast food joints are franchises, and so particularly sensitive to regional differences in taste and demographics. These specific businesses aren't in Northern Virginia because no one apparently thinks they would be a good investment, not because of unsmiling government clerks and $100 permits.

The District, incidentally, is not part of Northern Virginia, so any gamesmanship between Walmart and the City Council is wholly irrelevant here. The first Walmart to open in Fairfax County, however, was in 1993.

LOL! Apparently the owners of pho and kebab places are a lot smarter than sorry-ass burger chain franchise holders.

I suppose then it's a good thing that Cook Out is not a burger joint.

(They do have burgers, among other things.)

If you do want a burger that's better than McDonalds, you can get one at Cook Out way after midnight. You can't do that at the places above.

But it's really about the pulled pork sammiches and hotdogs and hush puppies and other goodies. Drive through. At 2 AM. For super cheap. NoVa ain't got nuthin like that.

Look at cook outs prices, you can't get anything near that at those restaurants.

menu.jpg

My fav lunch was

.99c hush puppies + mexi hot dog, that's all for under $3. Can't beat it! You couldn't even get small fries at 5 guys for that price.

I hope one opens around here. Haven't tried the food yet, but at those prices it must be worth it.

xactly! Not a franchise, family owned, 140+ locations, was only about 70 when I first found them a couple years ago. They don't even have a website, unbelievable really.

The last time I ate at Red Robin in Fair Lakes was three years ago. The burger just did not taste right and I did not finish 1/2 of it. I was vomitting three hours later. Have not been back since. Having said that, I think it is bullshit that we have such a lack of variety in NOVA and have ever since I moved here in 1987. McD's, BK, Wendy's etc. must have been giving kick-backs to the politicians to prevent other businesses from moving in. It is just in the last couple of years that Five Guys and these other joints have moved into FFX Cnty.

What the hell are you talking about lack of variety in Northern Virginia? Jeez, you must have seen the overpopulation of burger joints lately, Elevation Burger, Smash Burger, Dice Burger, Rays Hellburger, five Guys Fuddruckers...etc...etc.

We eat more cow in Northern Virginia than That beast Hillary Clinton!

Get out more and drive around. Red Robin is for kids anyway. Cook Out is unique and sure, we welcome them here if they have a market to support it. I think the overhead here would signifcantly drive up the prices they charge in rural areas.
