My first calculator was the Bomar Brain cost $300 ... cool digital thing to do was to spell out words on your calculator when you turned it upside down.
I'VE USED AN OLD CALCULATOR, and did some math using reverse polish notation :)
MADE IN USA, when china was still counting on fingers.
THE BUTTONS WERE NOT BUTTONS BUT METAL PADS. YOU HAD TO USE A PEN WIRE ON THE INPUT SQUARES. RED LED SCREEN
i think it was a prised possession of the dr. of mathematics - father of a friend who gave me the show and tell on it
try and find it on the internet :)
you'll find a surprising number of HUGE TECH NEWS FROM PAST, like 100-wide bus (today's is 64, they had 100 wide in the 1980's for a reasonable price)
are hidden by google

(handheld battery operated i mean - "totally cool stuff" when the thing was made of course. big old calculators had buttons you could press. the first digital electronic ones didn't. it worked by electrical contact only. put the squares nothin happens)

(the calculators with plastic buttons you can press - those were in high production and not worth collecting. certainly some people want you to believe they're collectable)

ah now i remember.
Reverse polish notation in an HP.
it must have been a "pretty early" HP calculator PROTOTYPE with an HP processor in it. you only use RPN if you have "push pop" instructions in a chip. it was show and tell explained to me that was what was going on. (i later learned this on linux as "easiest parser to make" while doing byacc examples - but who is that crazy richard stallman?)
PROBALBY MY FRIEND was told never to touch the actually collectable calculator. but you know. show and tell is important!!

IT TURNS OUT UK TRICKED HP INTO DONATING THE PLANS FOR THOSE CALCULATOR CHIPS
UK CALLED IT THE 'ARM PROCESSOR'
they also stole GNU compiler - though improved it (at first, then used it as a virus vector to attack usa on behalf of china)
THE SAME NOW OWNED BY CHINA - MAKING 'CROME PRODUCTS' that all say made in china

i prolly forgot the say the original gcc that linux got from C was taken from AT&T C by HP - who PAID FOR THEIR COPY
they had used it for assembling binary code for calculators and other HP products - which were prolific
NASA was also in that game, asa well as GE and some other huge names ...
(ALL WHICH BEGOT GOLDEN PARACHUTE CEO - some like IBM from foreign attack countries - who intently outsourced and destroyed those companies - making MADE IN USA a trade deficit with china)
