FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) -- Three former teachers and administrators at Fairfax County's biggest elementary school allege they faced racial discrimination and anti-pregnancy bias during their time there.

The lawsuit, filed last month in federal court in Alexandria, alleges that Bailey's Elementary Principal Marie Lemmon told her assistants to only hire pretty, young blondes.

An assistant principal, Rachel Charlton, who now works at another Fairfax County school, said Lemmon began treating her with hostility once she got pregnant, and told her that she shouldn't start a family until she became a principal.

The lawsuit also alleges that Lemmon dismissed a non-Christian family's concerns about serving pork in the cafeteria because "we live in the United States."

John Torre, a spokesman for Fairfax County Public Schools, which is named as a defendant, declined comment Wednesday.

We DO live in America. If we try to take away everything that bothers anybody, let's make a list:

Milk
Gluten
Sugar
Genetically modified whatever
Wheat
Apples
Chicken
Eggs
Sodium
Peanut butter

If pork bothers you, don't eat it. This IS a free country.
Just because something bothers you doesn't mean the whole world can revolve around you. I am on her side with this.

This IS America. You are free to pack a lunch for your child if you don't like the food. But maybe the kid is getting free lunch. Is it not good enough?

Come on folks… she can have biases…we all do. But, to say some of this stuff is over the top especially in the role of principal for all kids. ALL kids! She's a disappointment for our county.

I guess I'll wait for the evidence. Right now, this is just accusations. Truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
The principal may need to go--if she really did hire only whites, then something is seriously wrong. One the other hand, Charlton may have been excusing herself from responsibilities due to her pregnancy. No problem with bringing a breast pump to work and pumping, but some people make a bigger deal out of it than they should. I imagine she had an office, so it should have been no big deal--not so easy for a teacher. Anyone who has worked around pregnant women and new moms know that some people take it in stride and some abuse the role--constantly using it as an excuse. You cannot have it both ways. If you want to work, you cannot use motherhood as an excuse to avoid responsibilities. I think most women handle this well, but I know some who use it to get out of work--and yet still expect the promotions that others get.

Anyway, if the accusations are true, she should be fired pronto. If not, then she should be okay. Truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
I guess I just find it hard that someone could say the things they say she said. Not only is that racist and ignorant--it is downright stupid.

I have worked with this lady before and can ensure the allegations are TRUE! I'm in the central office and have watched this happen from afar and shame on me for allowing it to continue without stepping up. I'm glad some have taken this on and have enough courage to take this lady on. She has told me and others before that some have tried to take her down before and it would never happen. She does prefer hire newer teachers, she told me this before.

She is mean spirited and doesn't care who she bulldozes along the way. I have heard her talk very poorly about the same people taking care of her now...some of the leaders who work with me. She would have lunch with one of the new "cabinet" members in the Leadership Group and one right out and say they suck as leaders and even referred to one as "stupid as hell".. The same person referenced in this lawsuit. She "snows" some of the leaders, they adore her...and then she stabs them inthe back! If they only knew....Most principals would have been removed by now. But, they seem to protect her. She's even referred tithe new Supt. as the "Texan B from Hell." Im sure dr g would love to know it!

You are so right...the facts here are so true. I too know her, and have seen how she has impacted good people's lives very negatively. I wish someon would have stepped up sooner.,,,but they saw what she was allowed to do for years to other people, especially at her other school. Sad, just sad that it has come to this!

Principal sounds like many around FCPS and probably needs to be put into check. So many of the Elementary principals are slimy politicians, appears that this is less likely in Middle & High School, but there are probably some there as well.

Seems the problem is with the parents and employees not stepping up and challenging these slime balls but I also blame the Cluster Directors because they are likely not in touch with what is going on.

These so-called principals get these jobs and do not know what teaching is about because they have only taught for a few years.

Teachers are adults and custodian are adults and should not be demeaned in any way!

Somebody from the supervisory positions should be checking on PRINCIPALS!

Not all principals are bad. Just ones like this who make them all seem bad. Most work hard, unlike this one who sits around and will do teachers nails to keep some happy with her. Whatever...she should ask to be moved to Central Office until this is settled. A real professional would to make the right decision for kids. Oh, she's not about kids...she's about herself and how fast she can climb the ladder.

Charlton, who was an assistant principal, claimed that Lemmon was harsh to her during her pregnancy and after she returned from maternity leave; Calhoun and Stith alleged that they were forced out because they are black and that Lemmon hired young white women to replace them.

It was enough evidence for the case to move forward. The school board lawyers came up with agreements with every plaintiff so the case could be dismissed with prejudice.

The case was settled out of court.

It's not good when principles are corrupt and or do not prevent abuse of students and teachers wasting school time on gambling, case in point Theroux middle school principal is aware of big time abuse by their long time tech teacher who spends 100's of school hours running gambling involving 50 plus teachers, staff etc, emails show young female teachers bringing money to this tech teacher during school hours, you wonder what this long time male teacher has on these young female teachers, the tech teacher is also making a 90 year old take medication he does not need so that tech teacher can steal his money, emails show that teacher and his bully wife talking about how they can now take 10,000$ one week vacations, anyone with more info please help to save the 90 year olds life
