Brad Gushue's team qualifies for Olympic playoffs in men’s curling while enjoying a day off

Gushue’s team officially qualified for the playoff round in the Olympic tournament Wednesday afternoon — and locked into third place in the round-robin standings — after both Russia (Sergey Glukhov) and Switzerland (Peter de Cruz) suffered losses at the Ice Cube.

“We’re super pumped,” Gushue said after his team practised at the Ice Cube on Wednesday. “It feels great to know we’re playing for a medal. That was job No. 1. Now it’s just a matter of coming out strong in the semifinal and going from there. Win or lose (Thursday night), we’re still going to be going for a medal, whether it’s bronze, gold or silver. To have that opportunity is exciting.”

“We knew there was a chance things could play out this way,” Canada third Mark Nichols said. “You don’t want to think like that and hope for it, but to see both of those results certainly makes the day off feel a little bit better.” The only team that could match Canada’s record right now is the United States (John Shuster). That team is at 4-4 and needs a win Thursday morning against Denmark to lock up the fourth and final playoff spot.
