Police were dispatched to the 7000 block of Old Keene Mill Road for a report of an armed suicidal man in his 60’s. Upon arrival on the scene, officers contained the area and coordinated a lock down of Garfield Elementary School, in addition to evacuating the location, which was the Springfield United Methodist Church.

After officers contained the scene and while awaiting the arrival of SWAT officers and trained negotiators, they encountered the man which resulted in an officer involved shooting. The man is in serious but stable condition at a local hospital.

SPRINGFIELD, Va. (WUSA9) -- Officers in Virginia locked down a school and church when responding to a report of an armed suicidal man on Monday.

Officers were called to the 7000 block of Old Keene Mill Road at about 1:15 p.m. where a suicidal man was armed near the Springfield United Methodist Church, police said.

Officer contained the area, locking down the Garfield Elementary school and the church itself.

Officers encountered the man prior to the arrival of SWAT officers and negotiators, resulting in the officer-related shooting, police said.

The man is a serious but stable condition, police said.

No he is not "in it for money".
He is a very nice quiet man who fell aoart emotionally. He was told to drop his weapon and he did not comply.

Very sad...if there is anything that needs fixing in Fairfax county...like other areas is access to mental health services for people in crisis.
