The Great Soda Bust of the 1970's

Fairfax was HOOKED ON SODA from late 1970's to, maybe, end of 1980's

Soda shops opened up that sold: ONLY SODA, every color, every flavor, ever brand

IT ALL WENT BUST after some "smart guys" made the news ...

citric acid causes tooth decay, sugar causes diabetes, (even diet coke is a stretch on what is "ok" to drink regularly)

THE INDUSTRY WAS RUINED, and the soda stores converted to wine (storage) stores then totally shut doors most of them

What weird fantasy is this? I was there and I remember exactly zero 'soda stores.'

All of that was well known during the 1970s and even before. It was simply a change in the fashion. Plus most of the soda shop "stores" I remember were attached to gas stations and they expanded into selling other items.

Remember when Fairfax county banned disposable soda cans? I think it was around 1979. We had to bring the used bottles back to the store for a 10 cent deposit to be returned. It was a huge pain in the ass.

^ as a kid, under commandment from parents, recall taking bottles to the local High's store for deposit refund and the store clerks were always pissed.

The PoP Shoppe was operating out of the Abandoned Burger Chef in Annandale before it became Arthur Treachers.
