driving from Herndon to Alexandria

Leaving Herndon (near police station) a bit after 6p, weekdays. Realistic to get to Alexandria, Van Dorn off the beltway, before 7p?

(same day, for the smart asses)

Yes, that's reasonable and your times will vary...greatly.

You may want to consider getting an EZPass (if you don't have one already) because if you're pressed and it's backed up, you may need to jump on the 495 Express Lanes in order to maintain your timetable.

Check traffic before leaving. You may be better off taking 66 to Rosslyn then cutting over to the GW Parkway if you're headed to the Old Town area. There's a bit of maneuvering you need to do (there's no merge between) them, but it can be done.

If you get to the Beltway by 6:30, you are golden. The other direction on the Beltway is bad in the AM. It takes me 25 minutes to get from McLean to my office off of Van Dorn. I leave at 6:30. I never use the Express lanes in the morning since there is no need and you are far more likely to get a speeding ticket. There are always Troopers on the Express lanes and almost never on the Beltway.
