Yes, the memories of super 29. I saw "Sex on the Groovetube" there back in 1979...such a cult classic that most punks these days have never seen.

Thanks for sharing the old movie flyers... awesome!... Would also like to see any pics of the Hunter's Lodge. Saw a number of flicks at the Super 29. Probably the last and only one remembered was a horrible movied called- 'Take This Job and Shove it' around 1981. Sat in the back of friend's '75 Camero while we talked on the CB radio with others and getting occasional squeal/interference from the drive in speaker on post. Later headed to a nearby place called Partners and had to leave a few minutes after arrival with cops showing up and clearing the place for a fight in the parking lot. Drove back into Fairfax for Mr. Donut and a late night sugar fix... stupid but good memories.

This really does bring back all the good memories. My first wife and I spent many a Saturday night at the Super 29. They had some of the best X rated films of the day and we would totally fog up the windows on the old 68 Camaro.

I think it was the Lee Highway Drive In that showed the x-rated movies not Super 29. Lee Highway Drive In was at the location of the new Mosaic Project in Merrfield. I kind of remember it being Lee Highway cause some lonely Saturday nights would drive by trying to get a view of a 15 foot breast.

Lee Hwy Drive In used to show regualr feature films, if they did porn, I never saw it. I started going there in maybe 1979 so who knows.

Wow, that blog is awesome. I just went through and skimmed over all of the posts on there. I can't believe how much this area has changed. It really is sad how we've lost our "redneck" roots. Where was Bull Run Grill located? Anyone ever go there?

kdubs I too want to say what a great blog. All those years of driving by Hunters Lodge and never going in. I could kick meself. I do recall that WNVC/WNVT channel 53/56 the local public tv channel back then(now converted into something completely different MHZ Network with foreign programming) at Hunter's Lodge and they'd air it on Saturday nights. I think it ran for several years. wonder if tapes of the show might exist in some archives somewhere

Ever heard of Speedy Tolliver? If so do you think he played any gigs at Hunter's Lodge or any of the other local music haunts back there in the '40's and 50's?

Wingnut I'm finding more and more lately my memory may not be what is reality, uh-oh, but I thought for sure the last few years of Lee Highway Drive In's existence in Merrifield it pretty much showed softcore films but Super 29 kept showing regular run films almost to the very end. I can remember seeing The Betsy(ah Kathleen Beller) as one of the last films I saw there. And perchance a Mad Max film

I am totally sure that it was Super 29 that had the X films. That would have been in the very early 70's. I remember one by name, "Tobacco Rudy", as being one of the funniest x rated films i have ever seen.

Not wanting to step on toes of previous posts... Super 29 Drive Inn did present soft core 'adult films' for the time (late 70's to early 80's) in late-evening for Saturday, only? However, they were not X-rated offerings. Recall- Reston Twin Cinema's at the Reston International Center, providing XXX-rated films around 1979 for a couple of years. Starting from 12:00 midnite on Fridays & Saturdays, only. That movie house is long-gone, too.

Can't really help on the Super 29 Drive In.

However, the Lee Highway Drive In, where the Merrifield cineplex was recently, and now is part of the Mosaic Project, used to show the softcore "high school cheerleaders gone bad" movies, late night on weekends.

We used to go behind Best & Co. (I can't remember what it is now, but it is in the same strip mall as Uncle Liu's Hot Pot, and Unique thrift Store), and be able to watch the films without sound, but with store-bought $1.50 per six pack beers. We must have watched Blazing Saddles about 20 times, after we had seen it a couple of times "with sound" so that we already knew the script.

Yes, we were retarded, and socially inept (now officially categorized as "gay"), but that was high entertainment back in the day!

I remember that SUPER 29 used to show adult films which could easily be seen from the highway and the nearby Baptist Church!
