I have put in 34 years of working in this area. I got my pension and am moving to Kilmarnock to live out my days in a cottage by the river.

Lancaster county Virginia is a shithole. Only good thing going on there is the Autumn pumpkin fucking contest and the Spring chicken fucking contest. It is windy all the time and the winters are wet and nasty. You better have a good generator too because power failures are frequent.

Let's flip the question. Instead of why is everyone moving ask what is keeping people in this area. It certainly has a number of great things to offer, but for most of us it is JOBS. Remove work from the equation and either because of retirement or jobs going virtual and for many what is left? Even if you have friends and family in the area now, will they still be here in five or ten years?

Lancaster County isn't a shithole. If you are not into boating or fishing though it can rapidly become boring as fuck.

My co-worker retired and bought a home on the Florida Gulf Coast. I told him to rent first but he ignored me. Within two months couldn't stand it. Traffic worse then here, rednecks, crime. He wanted to sell his home but would lose 20k. He was warned by neighbors not to venture out after dark, its a gated community, and plenty of crime outside the fences.
