What year did Hot Shoppes Cafe close?

Does anyone miss the palm trees in the center of mall?

The Woolworth's was where the upper level of LL Bean is now
The Roy Rogers is where Diesel clothing store is now
The Burger King is where the Apple store is now (it also had a open doorway to Woolworth)
The movie theater is where Haagen Dazs is now. It was just the front entrance, you had to walk downstairs for the actual theaters.



The Vie de France was where the KFC/Taco Bell is at now
There was a perfum place across from Vie de France
There was some Bombay of India store back then.
Banana Republic in the 80's used to be safari themed. They had window displays of Jeeps, safari foliage, hats, etc..Now they are midscale dressy.

Yeah, it's funny nowadays to think a BK was there. I remember that special entrance at the side of the store too.

My memory of TCM is a little fuzzy but I recall pounding draft beers at Lums while my girlfriend and her friends tried on 200 different pairs of shoes (you could drink beer at age 18 back in those days).
I also remember the JB Hayes tobacco store had awesome cigars and there was a place called Barmart that sold whipits.

If you were it was still illegal but i suppose if you looked 21 no one questioned you. Minimum drinking age in Va has been 21 since the 1930's.

After prohibition ended, the legal drinking age in Virginia was 21. However, it was lowered to 18 in 1974 for beer and wine, then raised to 19 in the early 80s, and raised to 21 in '85.

I was right about it being 21 in the 1930s but i was lowered in the 1970's

I loved that pefume shop. I remmber the arcade and also remember when people could smoke inside the mall. I ran up a lot of credit cards in that mall when I was younger....sheesh..

When I was in high school in the 90s you could still smoke cigarettes in the Burger King at Tysons. It smelled even shittier than a modern BK.

I miss the Woolworths that had diners in them.

The original store where Rainforest Cafe is was The Sandwich Gallery. Not only did I drink my first beer there while working, but puffed my first cigarette. Raleighs, of all things. We called the always-drunk night manager chicken neck because..well, I guess you had to be there.

I remember the small Rainforest Cafe "booth" right outside the restaurant. You went there to make reservations and, at times, there was a long enough line. When it was your turn they would announce something like"[xyz] Party, your adventure is about to begin."

Tilt also had their annual sale.. signs were on most (if not all?) of the games and you could buy them.

Rainforest? Nah, nothing AND I MEAN NOTHING beats Farrells!!! =)


anybody remember when the Tysons post office was actually IN the mall and the Giant was out back! With People's Drug inside (they had their own arcade!!), the mall was, back in the day, seriously a one-stop shop place for regular ppl as well.

And the big green clock that was near that one end of the mall - what ever happened to that thing?

Nothing like resurrecting an old thread, but I remember before the post office was there. Filled out my Selective Service registration card in that PO, work at the Giant in the parking lot. Anybody remember Lansburgh's? or the walk-up pretzel shop that was near Hechts when the mall first opened? That was the only food you could have in the mall proper back then.

For those talking about the Burger King attached to Woolworth's, that started life as the Woolworth's lunch counter. There was not only a Hot Shoppes Cafeteria in the mall when it opened, but also a Hot Shoppes Junior, fast food place with burgers and featuring Pappy Parker's Fried Chicken. That later became Roy Rogers.

To the person who bought his SKS at Woolworth's, I used to carry my Mosin-Nagants and Enfields out through Bloomingdales after purchase. Made for a nice contrast.

And to the person who mentioned Barmart, man oh day, I haven't thought of that place for decades. That place fascinated me as a little kid. They used to have suits of armor in their all the time, with the bar stools & glasses, for some reason.

If you want to go further afield, who can give the location of the Tysons Locker Plant?, or The G.E.M. (Government Employees Mart)? Or when Tiffany's was the parking lot of which store?

If you want a look at how Tysons was in the 70's, go to Luciano's...first of all, great pizza, but it does seem to remind of how it was in the 70's and i'm not sure much has changed...

You could get all kinds of "regular" stuff at Tysons back in the 70's...there was a pet shop where I bought a garter snake. LOL. I'm sure you couldn't pay rent in Tysons now selling $.50 gold fish and $10 parakeets these days.

Bird cage in Aviary court, on the "backside" of Tysons where Towers Crescent is now was a complete neighborhood (Mimosa Drive) up until around 78 or so.

The movie theatre area reminded me of the fast times at Ridgemont high mall scene.

It was only one level, the lower level was still there (at least some of it) but it was used for deliveries, etc...

well, since I have it - I might as well put it here too............

That couldn't be Kojak's car. For some reason he always got a spot right in front of any building he drove to. The spot was always available. Kojack would never have to park that far away.

Brentanos wasn't a bad little bookstore. Doesn't seem like it was there very long. Waldenbooks was there for the first 20+ years of the mall. I think it became a B Dalton briefly before it disappeared.

Sullivans Toys was great. Too bad when FAO Schwarz came in in their place.

Luciano's is so awesome. I love that place. Great pizza. Always makes top lists without asking anyone to vote for them.

Good times! They raised it to 19 for beer and wine in stores right before I turned 18. They did that so high school seniors couldn't buy beer for underclassmen. We could still drink in bars though, and could still buy in stores in Maryland and D.C. (Hello Dixie Liquor just over Key Bridge)

1982 was also the last year for smoking areas in FC high schools if I'm not mistaken. Maybe I should sue FCPS for my current smoking habit. After all had I not been allowed to smoke cigarettes in school, I probably wouldn't be smoking them now.

Also, does anyone really ever go to Tyson's anymore? I haven't been there in years. If I have to go to a mall I go to Fair Oaks.

Does anyone remember much about the bird cage mentioned here? How big was it? What kind of birds were in it? Anyone have any pictures of it. Thanks.
