Today's RINOs were 15 years ago the heart and soul of the Republican party, just as today's DINOs were the backbone of the Democratic party a generation ago. The Trumpian agenda is opposed by over 2/3 of Americans, just as the agenda being pushed by AOC and her pals is probably only supported by about 1/4 of Americans. If today's Trumpians are unable to look past their base, they won't ever win the presidency again, and in another generation will become irrelevant.
As someone who is slightly to the left of center I want the GOP to remain viable. Having a viable option is what keeps a party honest. You committing political suicide by going on a crusade for political purity isn't just bad for the GOP. It is bad for the country.

Donald Trump has some major character faults, but he also did some good things for the country. Impeaching him for a riot which began taking place while he was still speaking is simply ridiculous, especially considering he urged demonstrators to march peacefully. Meanwhile, it's the Democratic Party which needs to dump its extremist wing. Tell AOC, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and the rest of the progressives to go take a hike. So should Liz Cheney, Barbara Comstock, Adam Kinzinger and the rest of the RINO's.

Before Donald Trump took to the podium on January 6 he had already tried to suborn Georgia election officials to deliberately alter the outcome of the Georgia election. Before the first vote was cast in the general election Donald Trump was already talking about election fraud. In the fall Donald Trump announced that he would only recognize the results of the election if he won. While there were tens of thousands of votes left to be counted Donald Trump was demanding that the voting be stopped. He made deliberate efforts to try and get state legislatures to disregard the outcome of the votes and their states. He made deliberate efforts to get his own Vice President to try to manipulate the electoral vote count to prevent Biden from being declared the winner. Whenever anyone insisted on following the rules rather than playing along with Trump's fantasy, he publicly attacked them. Even when they were members of Trump's own party. The January 6 protest wasn't to show disapproval of the election results. It was to influence Congress to alter the outcome of the election. All of this is clearly documented.
What Donald Trump intended on January 6 was to carry out a coup. He intended to have the mass of his supporters intimidate enough members of Congress that they would set aside the results of the electoral vote as a step in declaring Trump re-elected. That he did not specifically intend that his supporters would result to violence in gaining access to the Capitol to carry out his plan is irrelevant. Just as the fact that Donald Trump in his own mind believed that he had been re-elected was irrelevant.
In January of 2001 Al Gore presided over the counting of electoral votes that declared he had lost the 2000 election. Gore had far better grounds to doubt the outcome of that election than Trump did. Likewise in January of 1961 Richard Nixon presided over the counting of electoral votes that declared he had lost the 1960 election even though there were allegations of fraud. In 2021 Donald Trump chose not to follow their precedent. Instead he acted like a spoiled six year old.
Donald Trump deserved to be impeached for what he did. He deserves to be convicted. It is refreshing to see at least some Republicans say as much. He probably won't be. Still a clear message needs to be sent that conduct like Trump's is unacceptable. He could be criminally charged for his behavior. Men are convicted for less, and with less evidence. Between impeachment and criminal conviction, the former would be the better outcome for our country.
