Every time a place opens that knows how to make a good gyro they aren't in business that long. A big part of making a good gyro is making a good pita. But it is a fairly simple recipe.

There are many excellent gyro places in the area, and some have been running for 30 years and more. You clowns need to get out more.

Nothing is great in Jacksonville. All the crap that Florida is famous for, and you're still at least a 30-minute drive from the beach.

By the way, area 'family restaurants' will often have steak-in-a-sack on tne menu.

You're going to love the 8th grade, if you can ever manage to get there.

Jacksonville is HUUUUUUUUGE...the largest city by area.

So, yes indeed it has some pretty sketchy areas...and, some pretty nice ones...Atlantic Beach, Ponte Vedre, etc...

Amelia Island is one of the finest beaches on the East Coast. Jacksonville proper is a southern metropolis with a ghetto, penthouses and suburban tract homes. It's no Northern Virginia but, like many places in the world if you have means, you can live well in JAX.

I remember steak in a sack in Arlington Virginia back in the late 60s early 70s. Give us Middle Eastern owned
It was stuffed pita-style middle eastern bread with steak, onions and cheese and very definitely spiced with lots of cumin.

Was on the left side of the center towards Gifford's Ice Cream, I ate there a few times, the place had a steady good business with a lot of people at lunchtime , this was back in the 70's and it was a splurge for a young state trooper then . Then one day I woke and wanted a Steak in the Sack and it was gone when I was able to get by off duty . I can't remember if it was steak sub type steak or gyro but at that time till some time later I never had a gyro. I ate inside as we were forbidden to eat in the units other then in emergencies the state wanted us to be seen and answer questions when we ate as they paid so much a day on duty for meals. It was good and so were many other places , I cant remember if any cabbies were around they could have seen me and left which some people always did

...but, for sure, I had my first gyro ever at that fine place.
And Giffords! Oh, yes! They had a mint sauce sundae that I remember to this day! I recall my joy at discovering at SECOND Giffords location in Burke.

Seems as though life was pretty good back then. It's still good...just more miles & history under my belt coloring Mr perception.

There was one at Bradlees off of Rt 7 back in the day that attracted a lot of cabbies, cops, utility workers and deliverymen. This usually indicates good food is served. The Weenie Beanie in Shirlington had much the same clientele.
