Can you install a fence on top of a septic drain field?
Posted by: digger and filler ()

We are considering installing a fence, but it would be over our septic system drain fields. Is this doable? If so, how deep can the holes for the fence posts go? This is in Fairfax County.

You can install a fence over a septic field, but dont put post where a line is. Even if you puncture a the perforated line its not the end of world. The line is full of holes to allow draining.

How do you find the lines?

Miss Utility does not identify private septic systems. They do utilities. But, they still have to be called first.

We typically use a metal rod specific for the purpose, and push it in the ground to map out the location of the drain lines. You can hear it when it hits the gravel beds below the surface. It's not usually too difficult, but an experienced sceptic field guy can usually map it out through this method, and coupled with the knowledge of how these fields are usually laid out. I'd hire one for a few bucks and let them map it out for you on a plat drawing of your property for this and future use.

Vitally important to have a serious security fence around the perimeter of your septic field...lest you find your yard filled with shit - spewing conservatards and their poo - chowing libtard buddies.

Skip the fence at your own peril.

You can probe as mentioned early, but usually you can actually see greener grass/weeds in rows where the poo has been fertilizing. Look real close and I bet you can see where they go.

Also google earth can also give an idea of where the drain lines run. (They will be greener)

There should be plans on record at the County offices of the approved assembly. Once you have the plans you can determine where to put the fence posts. Remember to leave a big enough access gate to allow trucks and service equipment in.

The county has field maps of every property that has been built in the past 30+ years. They should be able to provide you with one if you go down there. They are not exact, but will get you in the general area of the leech lines and distrubution box..

I'm struggling with the same issue right now. However, I'm not sure how to act in this situation. I was thinking about probing the area, but it doesn't sound very safe. A friend of mine recommended me to contact a company that provides fence post repair services, in order to get the work done by the professionals. They certainly know how to manage such problems since they install them daily. So, I think that it is more reasonable to call this company. In fact, how did you manage to solve this problem?
