Sen. Warner has been good for Virginia’s students

As the legislative representative for the Fairfax County Federation of Teachers, I have a duty to make sure all children in Virginia have the opportunity to get a valuable education. I know Senator Warner feels the same way.

During his time as governor, education was always a top priority. He allocated $1.5 billion toward K-12 education, which is the largest education investment in Virginia history. Since becoming our senator, he has expanded his efforts to address education equality throughout the commonwealth, as well as throughout the country. Earlier this year, he worked along side Senator Kaine to secure a $1 billion increase in Head Start funding and $250 million worth of grants for states to improve the quality of preschools for low and moderate income families.

All politicians say they want to improve education – few do the work to back it up. Senator Warner has, and our public schools are benefiting from it. It is clear he truly cares about the future of Virginia’s children and I appreciate that.

Barry Weinstein, Legislative Representative

Senator Warner has not worked to improve education in VA, quite the contrary. I think most immigrants are good, hard-working people and immigration, generally, is good for our country. However, supporting an administration that has created a crisis of open-streaming of immigrants across the borders and into our schools has not improved education. It has created a crisis in education.

Senator Warner has also provided consistent support to an administration whose economic and regulatory policies have burdened the middle class. He has supported an administration that has often operated outside the rule of law. He has supported an administration that has been plagued with scandal and corruption across the board.

Senator Warner helped to put a community organizer in the White House and a K Street lobbyist in the governor's mansion.

Warner seems like a nice guy but is consistently on the wrong side of things for the working taxpayers of VA.

Weinstein can run his mouth all he wants but Warner has his nose firmly planted in Obama's buttcheeks. Time for him to go.

In other words, since Senator Warner doesn't subscribe to the hard core conservative agenda you and a minority of the national population believe in, he couldn't possibly have been good for education...or for the country in general.

OTOH I do not subscribe to the position of Mr. Weinstein that more spending necessarily equates to being good for students or education. Policy initiatives which allow schools to operate more effectively would rank far above more spending. This is especially true where the additional money is frittered away, where additional Federal money is used to justify decreased spending on the state or local level, or where the additional Federal money means the states must divert resources from other programs that are more beneficial.

So what was this additional spending actually for? For example what is that $1 billion in additional Head Start funding actually being used for? Does that mean more kids will be participating in the program? Is that increasing the share of the cost of head start that is being paid by the Feds? Is that simply the increased cost of the Fed's share of the program? How much of that $1 billion is making its way to FCPS's coffers? And what are the strings attached to that money? In other words why is this additional spending actually good for the students of Fairfax County schools?
