Just stepped outside myself to see what was making the sounds but I can't see anything from my place it Burke but I know a fighter jet when I hear it. I was stationed in Japan and we had large sign outside the base that read "Parden our noise, but it's the sound of freedom."

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. – The North American Aerospace Defense Command and its geographical component, the Continental United States NORAD Region, will conduct exercise Falcon Virgo 14-10 Monday night, July 14, 2014, through Wednesday morning, in the National Capital Region, Washington, D.C. Flights are scheduled to take place between midnight and 5:30 a.m. (EDT) each day.
If there's inclement weather then they switch it up a day or so..

What the hell? What's the point of waking up a few million people (and my dogs, which is why I got out of bed and came online to see what was going on) by doing it now? It's cloudy overhead here -- couldn't see much but I was outside for just a few seconds. Geez, that sound is loud. I'm a an area native, and only remember it that loud a couple of times.

Remember around fourth of July there was some news report about how it'd be nice if we warned veterans due to their PTSD that we were planning on setting off fireworks in our neighborhood? Someone posted on FFU about it.

Wonder how many of them are freaking out from being awakened in the middle of the night by the sounds of fighter jets!

I think they will come back soon. Havnt heard anything for about 20 minutes. Probly circling all the metro area. Looked they thy were heading south towards Richmond. They will eventually come back this way.

They just passed over Vienna. It went on a good 10 mins.

I immediately recognized the sound. When my husband was stationed in Norfolk, we lived in VB right near NAS Oceana, so I got used to the jet noise.

Fighter jet passed over Oakton at 1:50 AM. Windows were open, woke me up, was dead quiet outside so reverb could be heard for over a minute after it passed. Wished I had my microphone array running.
