The clouds remote file storage all the software companies are pushing, computers are being made now with lesser memory storage and many do not have CD/DVD drives.

Right now many of the clouds are basically free but when they get so many peoples info in them they will begin to charge 9.99 , 19.99 then 29.99 and up every year with no way to use a external hard drive and a small memory on your new computers

Its been happening since google started giving out free emails, where have you been? Back then it was still called the "web", Cloud is the new marketing term.
Solution is to keep your old laptops, don't throw them out an install linux.
