Buying a car in Va and the DMV VA
Posted by: CarBuyer ()

I am buying a car off an individual this weekend. Naturally they plates will be taken off and then I have to go to the DMV and get new plates put on.

The inspection sticker on the car is good till Dec. 18. Do I have to get it inspected right away or is the inspection sticker good till 12/31/18? And what about emissions, when do I need that done?

Thanks in advance.

The safety inspection if in Virginia is transferable. I don't believe safety inspections are required to title the car, only to operate it on Virginia roads. The car will most likely need an emissions inspection. The seller can get this done before you buy the car. If you don't have emissions I believe they can issue you a 30 day tag and you will need yo get the emissions inspection done before they issue a one or two year tag. Make sure the seller can show you a clear title before closing. Do not take his word for it that the lien shown on the title has been paid. You can do the closing in the DMV parking lot so you can put the new plates on it and drive away.

DMV's website used to be good at explaining much of this.

Get a $5 trip permit at dmvonline.gov
Write in the bill of sale that the title is “free from liens”
Make sure that new car is insured.
Drive home.

Have you ever been to the dmv lately?
Niggers and illegals clogging the doorways.

Hope it’s not a Kia Optima you’re buying, they suck shit!

For extra protection, pay the $10 to get signatures notarized! My credit union does it for free.
Also, use the pre printed “bill of sale” form.

Negotiate a lower price if title not in his name(floating title, which is illegal).

Be mindful of the fact that there are many flood cars being sold in this area. They are transported into this area, and sold to unsuspecting fools that believe they are getting a good deal.

Go to one of the satellite DMV locations, for example the one in Fairfax City hall. There are others.

They only do paperwork things like title and registration, but tend to be a much more pleasant experience.

The people working there are not DMV employees. In my experience they are friendlier and more willing to find a way to make things work.

I decided to approach this purchase more profitably and began to google where in Europe it is cheapest to take a car. In the end, I decided to buy a car in Lithuania, and it was the right decision. The car has a complete history, was well looked after by the previous owner, I got an almost new car at a fairly low cost.
