Firefighters fill boots with money and donate t o a charity. The problem is that 85-90% of the money given to charity is used to run the charity (big salaries, etc) and only about 10-15% of that money makes it to the people who need the money.

They started early this year. They were out in Herndon on Thursday.

It's illegal to stand in the median and obstruct traffic. Anyone else would have been run off or jailed by the police at this point.

I guess laws don't apply to firefighters.

They are filling for MDA. Check with MDA and you'll get the following facts: only 24 cents of every dollar donated goes to running the MDA offices.

The rest of the money goes directly to programs such as the summer camp for kids with MDA, wheelchairs and other medical equipment to assist the families with children stricken with this disease.

In addition, the money collected in this area goes to help those with MDA in this area so we are giving to our own community.

If you don't want to give then just don't give. Monday will be the last day they are out there for those who do wish to donate.

Not that I don't appreciate and admire their effort, but only quarter of every dollar isn't something to be proud of. Multiple other charities doing similar work with much, much better financials. I'm all for charity, but we easily have the tools at our disposal to do better with our money.

Look, the length of time these guy's are shaking the book is a little annoying, but I don't think you have read your own link. A QUARTER of every dollar goes to admin,advertising,etc..... 75% goes to the programs and people the charity is supposed to benefit. Did you read your own link you posted ? It's the first item noted. There are more efficient charities, and there are many well known which are a lot worse.

I stopped all donations since the implementation of Obama Care. I thought that was the solution to everyone's medical needs.

They weren't at every intersection. Saw them once at Stone Rd and Lee Highway, which is where I gave. Saw them again at West Ox and Fair Oaks Parkway and the light wasn't red, so I didn't stop.

Was out today and didn't see them anywhere.

On January 1st, I make all of my charitable donations online for the year. When I get a raise and or promotion, I adjust accordingly.

The reason people take issue with this Brian is because it puts public servants unnecessarily in harms way. It's also hard for me to take seriously the FCPD's enforcement of jay walking when I see the firemen doing it every year as part of this charity cash grab. It's unsafe.

This speaks nothing of the value of the charity.

If a charity spends more than 33% on overhead they are considered to be not meeting the mission. More than 23% overhead is considered inefficient.
