Interesting that schools are closed but bus drivers will still be getting paid. I don't know if bus drivers have contracts like teachers, but it seems so wasteful to continue to pay them. According to two of my school bus driving friends, all of the school bus drivers are going to need to go thru the training center again. And what condition are those buses in after sitting for 6 or more months? Interesting article that says nothing.

Fairfax Co. schools to keep drivers, service workers busy as students stay home

The head of Fairfax County’s public school system said there are no plans to furlough bus drivers and food service workers, even as Virginia’s largest school district begins a new semester of virtual learning amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In a letter to staff dated Monday, Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Scott Brabrand wrote of a desire to keep the system’s thousands of students, faculty and service workers “100% intact” as it faces an unprecedented and prolonged period of remote instruction.

Without students to shuttle, bus drivers will instead be asked to deliver meals and school supplies, such as books, or perform light maintenance work. Brabrand said drivers will be compensated for their regular hours as long as they perform the work they are asked to do.


Even though revenue from food and nutrition services fell significantly because they are dependent on sales, Brabrand said the school system is working on a plan to keep all employees in that department working as well.

Those who are not helping put together or distribute grab-and-go meals for students will be recruited to help in other ways.

School office and security employees may wind up assisting with distance learning in some way, Brabrand said.

The letter closed with these words: “I hope this update will ease any concerns about your job. We truly value the work you do for our students, families, and community. Thank you.”

They have to be able to get a CDL and they have to be able to pass random drug tests and they have to be willing to put up with a bunch of shit. All of this for very little pay.
If we go back to school this winter we are going to need these bus drivers. If we lay them off about half of them wont come back. We are training new bus drivers even now as some of them have already quit.

If they are not doing the task they were hired for,they could be furloughed until needed or they pay could be reduced to 33% to help the bottom line of the budget.

Well no need to worry about the budget. We always get the money we need one way or the other. We will be keeping the bus drivers and lunch ladies on the payroll while they stay home or perform other tasks that benefit the good people of the county. You people are free to complain about it all you want but it will not change anything.

That would be just more proof that the FCPS Administration is far more concerned about preserving the school infrastructure than they are about educating students.

I'm sure if more people knew about this fraud it would be stopped.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have a better one. Since I am over 65 I am going to soak the county for all of the free and reduced cost services they offer. I may even file for real estate tax relief. I won't qualify but it will cost the county a few bucks just to process the thing.
