WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A man was cited on a weapons violation after he was stopped by Transportation Security Administration officers when they found a gun in his carry-on bag at Reagan National Airport.
TSA officers located the empty 9 mm gun and loaded magazine that was also packed, as he was passing through the airport checkpoint, according to officials.
The TSA officer who was staffing the checkpoint X-ray machine detected the handgun inside the traveler's carry-on bag as it passed along the conveyor belt, officials say.
Officers contacted the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police who responded to the checkpoint, confiscated the firearm and cited the man on a state weapons charge, officials say.
The man was permitted to catch his flight to Atlanta, minus the gun.
There was no impact to airport operations.
The TSA reminds travelers that weapons are not permitted in carry on bags, but can be transported in checked bags if they are properly packed and declared to the airline. More information about how to travel with a firearm can be found here...
