I have been an UberX driver for about 3 months and it is a fun part-time gig...I typically drive 8-10 hours on the weekend and use the extra money to fund a family vacation account. At my current pace I expect to net roughly $5000 over the next 12 months after accounting for gas and taxes.

While the author is correct on some of his facts, the reason why consumers prefer UberX seems to be based on several factors including:

- clean cars with working A/C
- drivers who understand and speak English
- drivers who are neatly dressed and don't smell
- pickup and dropoff at just about any destination
- riders rate the drivers...if my rating falls below a certain level I will be dropped

Do I worry about insurance? Yes, but I do my best to be careful understanding that accidents happen.

When there is not a Nationals game I spend most of my time in Southeast and have no problem getting rides. Why? My riders tell me that the area is badly underserved by taxis and they have no problem paying $20 for a trip from the Navy Yard to Columbia Heights, especially when I have a cold bottle of water on a hot day like Sunday.

The funny thing is I don't know how much business I am taking from traditional cab drivers. Most of the people I meet used a cab as a last resort.

I live in Vienna, but drive to DC. Am I going into the heart of Anacostia? No...when I stop and wait in SE it is typically close to the ballpark or near the Navy Yard. Most weekends I drive from about 2-10pm on Saturday, but I have found that Sunday morning from 9am to 2pm is pretty good with people trying to get home after a night out.

On a typical day I exit 66 so that I am near Clarendon or Courthouse and will usually have a ride into either DC or National Airport within about 15 minutes. From that point I respond to ride requests as they appear on my iPhone. The big question is always the end of the night...if I am downtown do I risk getting a ride to someplace like Bethesda or just go home. Last week I got lucky and picked up a group on Maine Avenue heading back to Fairfax City.

I have met some interesting people and am learning the city after living here for nearly 20 years. Had you told me how easy it is to get to Ben's Chili Bowl I would have tried it a long time ago.

Can you bring your family of 5 along with you on Uber rides? I think it would be a cool experience for my wife and 3 kids to pick up a stranger or two.

I guess if you had a very large vehicle, sure.

Would I ever drive a cab? NFW! While the potential for something happening is there, Uber (and Lyft) know who the passenger is and track the trip via GPS. Overall, I feel pretty safe.

Not that anyone asked, but my passengers tend to be early 20s to early 40s, mostly white and I would guess that they have at least a college degree and make anywhere from $40K to who knows what.

The main reason that I do not drive much past 10 or 11pm is that I don't tolerate drunks very well. Even the folks that I picked up during the bar crawl in Arlington a few weekends ago were pleasant and fun...plus I got an extra $50 in tips.

How about these taxi drivers make their service better rather than try to take out all competition? Here is a start, make sure your drivers speak English, and make sure they have a working credit card machine in their car, we're not in the 90s anymore. The article is pure propaganda written by the VP of Dulles Taxi.

VEIK...are you an UberX driver, or wanting to know if Uber goes to IAD? My understanding is that I can dropoff passengers at the airport, but pickups may be different. A couple of times I have stopped at the Crystal City Holiday Inn for a break and got a ride request from DCA. A friend often flies into DCA pretty late and the cab line can be hideous, so she uses UberX which gets her home in about 20 minutes.
