The real story is Germans were trying to make part of America German Flag - not illegal - and they wished to do so by creating A PRODUCTIVE AREA, legally, doing it the right way. They were failing and began taking in slaves to help the farms.

Slave labor represented a large financial investment. It was an investment that could reap substantial returns, not just from the slave's personal labor but also from the slave's offspring. Plus many slaves were expected to feed themselves which reduced the slave owner's cost of ownership. This isn't something that an owner is going to risk by unnecessary abuse or neglect.

That doesn't make it a pollyanna existence compared to poor free whites of the era. The slave overseer who was expected to get production but who lacked the financial investment in the slaves was always a threat as was the threat that a slave might get sold off and transported at any time, and the likelihood that the slave's offspring would suffer the same fate.
