I don't see Ralph Coonman seeking to close his alma mater. VMI is also known as the West Point of the South. Cadets from VMI were called into service by the Generals of the Confederacy and fought against Union troops. I would think that VMI stands as more of legacy of the South than a Gen. R.E. Lee statue in Richmond. Virginia taxpayers cover 26% of VMI's costs.
