How to make it in NoVa with No college degree
Posted by: ChargerFFX ()

Was watching the USA Belgium game at a friends and he had a few friends over. My friend told me that most of his other friends dont have degrees and live on their own. I'm jealous that I still have to work at IKEA at $10/hr but it makes me wonder. These people didnt seem like the blue collar type, they actually seem well off (One guy had a BRAND new BMW). How do people around here make money with no College degree?

Lots of ways!

- Trade work (plimbing, electical, hvac, etc)

- An It job after getting certificates and some experience

There are lots of jobs that don't require any degrees and pay an okay a livable amount $18 - $25 per hour.

Plenty of ways. Trade work pays well. Not all trade work is construction either. My brother is a communication electrician and makes nearly $40/Hr. All he does is drive around Annandale and Fairfax, replaces cables, makes adjustments to HVAc controls.

I also have a friend who taught himself Coding and makes a KILLING in DC off freelance work.

You will never make it anywhere without at least a Harvard level Degree. Your peasant degreees from GMU and UVA will never stack up to the level of that from Harvard level universities. You got a brand new BMW 328i/545i? That's cute. In my circle of influence, we pity those in such wanna-be autos. We own nothing that costs less than $120,000. You plebes will never understand. Go to a real school and get a real degree.

Want to make tons of money? Banking/ Wall Street/ Government (not the low level government, I mean the level where you get your own bodyguards) is where the money is at. If you want money, it's there for you to take it. Step on the plebes until they rebel!

Sales (cars, real estate, patio furniture, carpets, whatever) often don't require a degree, just some product knowledge and real drive, since the most lucrative are commission based.

What's a "blue collar type", anyway? I've encountered a bevy of essentially illiterate "professionals", while a good friend of mine has his doctorate in Mathematics and works as a carpenter. He likes fashioning things with his hands, and doesn't like the academic paper chase.

Licensed plumbers and electricians in this area who speak English can easily make $200/hr on a regular basis. Most of the work is trivial, but you can prey on ignorant homeowners all day long and do very well.

Go to school and get your degree. Also continue to work while you do so you can build up your "connections". I had a mentor that had me list the things that I wanted to do and then the things I was good at. I wasn't so good in school, so I hired a tutor to help me with the subjects I struggled with. Do it now, you'll thank yourself later.

Just because he has a new BMW doesn't mean he makes a lot of money. Zero percent chance he owns the vehicle outright.

He's probably got his credit cards maxed out. He'll never have real security (which is what real money is).

Guessing they are single

As long as you are single and don't mind living with roomates say rent 700 or less per month

You can live like a king on as little as 20 bucks an hour around here

So many people are ticked because they are stuck in lame marriages with brats to feed and a mortgage they can barely afford

It is easier to just start your own consulting company (no degrees required) and HIRE out the people with the degrees to do the work. You skim 35% of their hourly rate.

I actually know somebody who did just that. Young Vietnamese guy with no degree who was doing grunt administrative and accounting work for us at a local government contractor. He said screw this, I see where the real money is. Formed a company with his wife and bid a bunch of 8A jobs, won one, and quit. He was doing real well last time I ran into him. Was trying to get me to come work with him. lol. He was a sharp motivated guy. A lot more so than most other robots draging their tired asses into work there with MS degrees in whatever who still hadn't figured that out. Took me a while too I'll admit.

Not having a degree obviously is a killer in some fields. Especially if you want to do something which involves working for somebody else the rest of your life. Which there are a lot of advantages to doing. Way easier than working for yourself in most cases. Even then it can have lots of advantages. But it's not the main thing holding back most. Plenty of smart people out there who have figured out ways to make a very good living without.

I had a friend start a consulting firm in Northern VA too, he and I have both worked in Telecom for about 20 years. He has no degree, but is very smart. He's hired a number of consultants and is now making six figures easily.

I know someone who brings people over from India on visa, teaches them programming for two years, and then contracts them out for big bucks.

Robbing banks would work. After all, that is where the money is.

LOL Plenty of jobs in the DC area that don't require degrees but require security clearances. If you have a TS/SCI clearance, there are opportunities abound.....and if you have a TS/SCI with full scope polygraph, there is no reason to make less than six digit salary.

Even the most menial jobs that require a security clearance brings in decent money. I've known people that are janitors in secure facilities that make over $30 an hour, simply because they are in an area where sensitive data is seen and heard, so they have TS/SCI clearances.

A Secret clearance can bring in good money, but those are a dime a dozen as they only require a simple background check.

Edward Snowden, before he defected, was making a six digit salary because he had a full scope TS/SCI and a couple of Cisco certifications. If a high school drop out can do that, you can do that.
